“But where is here?”

“We’re in Seattle.”

Brielle glanced at the rain streaming down the window. Seattle. Why had he brought her to the city?

“Where’s John?”

“He had to work or whatever. He told me to take care of you when you woke up.”

“How do you know him? Are you his sister? I thought she ran away.”

Did John even have a sister? She was starting to doubt it.

Desi smiled again. She didn’t look much older than Brielle—maybe mid-twenties—but her eyes seemed older somehow. She patted the bed next to her. “Come here, sweetie.”

Brielle wasn’t sure she wanted to sit, but Desi patted the bed again, so she took a seat next to her.

“You are so pretty,” Desi said, her eyes flicking up and down. “I can see why he likes you so much.”

That didn’t make Brielle feel better. “I don’t understand what’s going on. Who are you really?”

“I’m one of his girls.”

“What does that mean? One of whose girls?”

“John’s. I’ve been with him since I was eighteen.”

“With him?”

“Not like that. John doesn’t, um, partake. At least not that I’ve seen. It seems weird to me. He could have any one of us whenever he wanted. I know I’d be more than willing. But to each his own, I guess.” She reached over and moved a lock of Brielle’s hair. “Maybe you’ll be the exception. He might be keeping you for himself. I don’t know, he didn’t really tell me anything. How did you meet him?”

Trying to process what Desi was saying, she answered almost robotically. “He gave me a ride.”

“Hitchhiking?”

She nodded.

“Okay, things are making more sense.”

This wasn’t making any sense to Brielle. “How?”

“I overheard him arguing with someone on the phone. He said something about not knowing the town would turn out to be such a pain in the ass and he didn’t expect anyone to still be looking for you. And then he said something about unexpected legal problems but he was handling it.”

“Is that why he brought me here?”

Desi shrugged. “Seems like it.”

“He said he was going to keep me safe.” She didn’t know why she said that. It was getting harder to believe.

“Of course.” Desi rubbed her arm. “I’ve probably said too much. I thought you knew more about our setup, but maybe he hasn’t brought you in on it yet. And that’s totally okay. It took a while for me to understand it too.”

“What setup?”

“The thing is, it’s going to be so amazing once the lodge is done. He’s going to bring us all there and we’ll get to live in luxury. I can’t wait.”

“What lodge? Who gets to live there? And why did you say you’re one of John’s girls?”

“John is a very powerful man with a lot of important connections. He knows some of the richest men in the country. We’re talking actual billionaires.”
