With his hands gripping my hips and his body moving with mine, my climax overtook me. I spiraled in ecstasy, crying out as he found his release.

We collapsed to catch our breath, laying tangled together for a few moments before I went to the bathroom to clean up. He drew me back in bed with him, holding me close, his arms tight around me.

“I love that you’re mine,” he murmured.

“Me too.”

“I’m going to marry you, Marigold Martin.” He kissed my head.

I leaned back a little. “Are you trying to propose?”

“No.” He grinned. “Not yet. But I will. Just so you know.”

I smiled. “Thanks for the heads up.”

He kissed my forehead, then down my cheek. “Anytime.”

I nestled in his arms, happier than I’d ever been. Because Zachary Haven really was going to marry me.

Can't Do It

Brielle

Brielle relaxed, sinking into the couch cushions, enjoying her buzz. Desi lounged on the armchair, her legs stretched out, eyes half-closed and glassy. Whatever she’d given her, Brielle liked it. It made the voice in the back of her head—the one that was afraid—go quiet.

Despite Brielle’s promise to stay in the apartment, Desi still locked Brielle in the bedroom any time she had to leave. Brielle told herself she didn’t mind and the last thing she wanted to do was get her in trouble. Desi assured her that, eventually, she’d have all the freedom she needed. This was all for her own good; to keep her safe.

When Brielle was high, it was easy to believe that. Easy to push away the thoughts that made her scared.

Like being one of John’s girls.

She still couldn’t remember how long it had been since she’d seen John. A few days? A week? Desi seemed concerned that he hadn’t been back. She said something must have happened—something business related.

Brielle tried not to think about it too much. She tried not to think at all.

The sound of a key in the door made Brielle jump. Desi sat up, her eyes wide.

“Get in the bedroom,” she whispered.

She jumped up but couldn’t seem to move fast enough. The door opened and John walked in.

Anger clouded his usually handsome features. It was the same look he’d had the day he’d taken her from the cabin.

When he’d put her in the trunk.

Brielle froze like a terrified rabbit, her heart pounding in her chest. John’s angry glare moved from her to Desi.

“What is she doing out here?” he snapped.

“You left us here for days.” Desi got to her feet, and although she squared her shoulders, her eyes seemed uncertain. “What was I supposed to do? Leave her in there?”

He took slow steps until he was standing in front of Desi. “You’re supposed to do what you’re told.”

“She was scared. You didn’t even tell her anything.”

“What did you say to her?”

“Nothing.”
