“Don’t worry about it right now. First, we need to get you out of here.”

Brielle stepped back. She had to know. “Are you going to make me one of your girls? Is that why you picked me up?”

A flash of anger crossed his features. “We were going to talk about that later. Desi wasn’t supposed to scare you like that.”

“I’m not scared, I just want to know. Are you building a lodge to have parties and invite all your rich friends and I’m going to live there and be a…” She hesitated, then decided to use the word anyway. “A prostitute?”

“Oh, kitten.” He stepped closer. “You’re going to be so much more than that. I told you, you’re my special one.”

“What does that mean? I need to know.”

“It means you’re mine.” His voice had the edge of a knife. “I’ll take care of you and only give you to a select few. You get the best of everything. And in return, you’re going to help me find more pets, like you. You’ll take care of them and teach them everything they need to know.” He looked her up and down, brushing her hair away from her face. “You look so sweet. So fucking innocent. They’ll trust you. And if you’re a good girl, like I know you are, I’ll reward you.”

She took another step back. “What if I say no? What if I don’t want to?”

“You don’t have a choice anymore. Where are you going to go? Your family doesn’t want you. You don’t have anyone else.” He paused and stroked her face again. “And if you don’t obey me, I’ll send you away.”

“Where?”

“Does it matter? You’re fresh and pretty, I’d get plenty for you. But I have bigger plans.” He checked his watch. “We’ve been here long enough. It’s time to go.”

“Am I coming with you?” Desi asked.

John didn’t bother looking at her. “No. You stay here. Keep your appointments.”

“Why? John, please. Take me with you.”

He turned slowly. “I do not have the patience for your whining. If I get any complaints, I’m sending you to the docks.”

“No, don’t do that.”

The old Brielle almost broke free. She almost told Desi to run—to leave, get out, and never look back.

But John grabbed her wrist and led her toward the door.

“I don’t have my stuff.”

“You don’t need it.” He hauled her out and paused in the hallway to lock the door.

Brielle’s heart raced and her stomach turned. “Please don’t put me in the trunk again.”

“I told you, that was for your protection.” He grabbed her wrist again and led her to a flight of stairs.

“I know it was, I know. Just please don’t do it again.”

He whirled on her, hand raised. She flinched away, holding an arm over her face so he wouldn’t backhand her. But the blow didn’t come.

“I’m sorry, kitten.” He lowered his hand. “I’ve been under a tremendous amount of stress. I didn’t want to leave you here with Desi this long but I had to wait until I was sure we could get back to the cabin safely.”

“It’s okay, she was nice to me.”

“Girls like her are only good for certain things. You understand that, right? She knows her place and she does her job. But I have a lot more planned for you.”

“Why?”

“I had a feeling about you from the first time I saw you. You’re going to make me a lot of money, kitten. And don’t worry, I’m going to take very good care of you.”

She had no doubt that he would. At least, according to his standards.
