“I prefer working behind the scenes. Mostly I try to poke holes in contracts. Find the loopholes and make sure my clients don’t get screwed over by them.”

“Sounds complicated.”

He shrugged. “It is at first, but I guess I have a talent for it.”

I put my scissors down and ran my fingers through his hair, testing the length, then continued cutting. I wanted to ask him if he was married, but I couldn’t think of a way to casually slip it into the conversation. I never asked my male clients if they were married or dating someone. It just wasn’t something I needed to know.

But I really, really wanted to know.

“How long do you think you’ll be in town?” I asked.

“Not sure. The house I’m building is taking longer than I expected. My assistant has been handling most of it, but I decided to make a trip over here and see if I can get things back on schedule.”

“I’ve heard the house you’re building is beautiful.”

“Where’d you hear that?”

I shrugged. “It’s a small town. People talk. An out-of-towner building a big house is front page news here.”

I caught his smile from the corner of my eye.

“It’s going to be nice.”

Does your wife think so? Is your girlfriend helping you pick colors?

Nope, I couldn’t do it. I just kept cutting his hair.

I finished his trim, resisting the urge to lean closer and breathe in his scent as I cleaned up the back of his neck with the clippers. The shampoo I’d used smelled incredible on him.

After putting a little pomade in his hair, I took off the cape and brushed him off. I handed him a mirror and spun the chair around so he could see the back.

“What do you think?”

He touched the front and moved his head around. “It looks great. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I’ll get your coat and meet you up front.”

My stomach felt jumpy as I retrieved his coat from the hook and brought it to the front desk. I was glad I’d sent Stacey home early. There was no way she’d have missed the flush in my cheeks or the way I fumbled trying to ring him up. He stood on the other side of the desk, watching me with a slight smile on his face.

I gave him the total and he tapped his credit card to pay.

“You’re all set,” I said. “Do you want a receipt?”

“No, I’m good.” He paused, his eyes lingering on mine for a long moment. “I’d like to take you out sometime.”

I blinked in surprise, my mind racing. My lips parted but I couldn’t seem to get any words out.

He raised his eyebrows. “Yes?”

I closed my mouth and took a deep breath. “Sorry. Yes, I’d love to.”

He gave me that subtle smile again as he got out his phone. “Can I get your number?”

I gave it to him. Was this really happening?

“I’m busy tonight. But tomorrow?” he asked.

“Tomorrow would be great.”
