I startled. “Yes. Fine. Sorry. I’m coming.”

She held the door for me while I hurried inside out of the wind.

“Gina, I’ll be right with you.”

I went to the back office, took off my coat, and hung it on the back of the chair.

“Who were you talking to out there?” Stacey asked. “Was that Zachary Haven?”

“Yes.”

“Is he okay?”

“Honestly, I don’t know.” I grabbed a brush and ran it through my hair, trying to tame it after all that wind without totally destroying the loose waves I’d done this morning. “He was acting strange, but he’s also Zachary Haven, so who knows.”

“Don’t worry about your hair. You look gorgeous as always.”

I smiled. “Thanks, Stace. Can you distract Gina for a second? I need to make a quick call.”

“Of course.”

I pulled out my phone while Stacey went to chat up my client. I needed to call Annika.

“Hey, Mari,” she answered.

“Have you talked to your brother today?”

“Which one?”

“Sorry, Zachary.”

“No, I thought he was still at my parents’ place.”

“Maybe he was, but I just saw him and he was acting strange.”

“Strange, how?”

“Not himself. It’s hard to explain. He came up to me outside the salon and at first he just said thank you, I guess for helping him when he fell. Then it seemed like he wanted to say something else, but he was acting confused.”

“Uh-oh. My mom said he didn’t hit his head, but maybe he did and the doctors missed something.”

“Head injury was my first thought. But I don’t know, that wasn’t even the weirdest part.”

“What was the weirdest part?”

“He looked at me.”

“What do you mean? Why was that weird?”

“He never looks at me. He made eye contact.”

“Okay, that is weird.”

“Right? I don’t know what’s wrong with him, but maybe you should track him down. Or tell your mom or something.”

“I will. Thanks for the heads up.”

“No problem. Listen, I have a client waiting, so I have to go, but I’ll talk to you later.”
