More giggles.

Aunt Louise rolled her eyes and batted a hand at her friends. “Don’t encourage him. He’s incorrigible enough as it is.”

“What are you up to on this…” I glanced out the window at the rain, “not so fine day?”

“Just updating the Tilikum bachelor hierarchy.”

“What’s the bachelor hierarchy?”

“It’s a ranking of eligible Tilikum men. There are far too many bachelors in this town. Especially Haven bachelors, although the hierarchy isn’t limited to our family.”

“Okay, but what do you do with it?”

“It’s a tool that helps us focus our matchmaking efforts. And we might have a little wager now and again.”

I shook my head. Apparently Aunt Louise was notorious for trying to set my brothers up with women. Weirdly, she never tried to set me up with anyone. I still wasn’t sure whether to be relieved or insulted. My brothers all claimed I was lucky. Her attempts at matchmaking usually ended badly.

But why didn’t she even try with me?

I pulled up a chair and straddled it backwards. “How do I rate?”

She exchanged a knowing look with the woman sitting across from her. “That’s confidential information.”

“Come on, you can tell me. I’m at the top, right?” I flashed her a grin. “It’s fine, you can admit it.”

“You could be, but you have a certain reputation around town.”

I scoffed. “Rumors.”

“Are they? Didn’t you break Cory Wilcox’s nose?”

“I don’t think I broke his nose. I don’t even think I hit his nose.”

She raised her eyebrows.

“Hey, I was being chivalrous. He was being a jerk to his girlfriend. Someone needed to stand up for her.”

“Hmm.” She opened her little spiral notebook and jotted something down. “Interesting.”

“Do I get points for that?”

She shut the notebook. “Confidential information.”

“At least tell me I’m ahead of Garrett.”

“Garrett has a stable, respectable job and is a good father to Owen.”

“I have a stable, respectable job. And the fact that I don’t have any kids should be points in my favor.”

“Honey, you know I love you.” She patted my hand. “I’m just not sure if you’re the settling down type.”

I placed a hand over my heart. “Aunt Louise, I’m hurt. I’m completely the settling down type.” Or I would be, once I convinced Marigold to go out with me.

She tilted her head and narrowed her eyes. “Maybe I’ve been wrong and all you need is the right woman.”

“That’s exactly it. I need the right woman.”

Her eyes lit up. “I know! Doris Tilburn’s niece. She doesn’t live here in town, but that’s perfect. She wouldn’t have any preconceived notions about you. I’ll find out from Doris if she’ll be visiting soon.”
