She tried to hide her smile as she went fishing for a compliment. “Why does that surprise you?”

“Come on. You know you’re beautiful.”

Hearing him call her beautiful was more potent than the beer. “I am not.”

“Of course you are. Have you had a boyfriend? A serious one?”

“Yeah, a couple. The last guy cheated on me, so I dumped him.”

“Asshole.”

“He totally was.”

He hesitated, his eyes moving up and down. “Can I ask you another question?”

She took another drink and nodded.

“Have you ever been with a guy?”

Her lips curled in a smile. “John, are you asking me if I’m a virgin?”

He nodded.

She met his eyes and shook her head slowly.

“Good to know.”

She wasn’t sure what that meant. Had he been hoping she was a virgin? Or had he been hoping she wasn’t?

“Does it change how you think of me?”

“No. I was just curious.”

“Are you a virgin?” she teased.

He smiled. “No, definitely not.”

She liked this. The buzz and flirty banter. The attention. She wanted more of it; craved it. “What about you? Do you have a girlfriend? I see you don’t have a ring.”

He held up his left hand. “Nope.”

“And I’m really the only girl you’ve kept out here.”

“The one and only.”

“Why are you keeping me out here, John?” she asked, leaning closer.

He didn’t move. Just held her gaze in his. He didn’t seem uncomfortable but he didn’t invite her closer, either. Her last boyfriend would have had her shirt off by now if she’d given him the same look. But John wasn’t a boy. He was a man. A man with self-control.

God, it was sexy.

He took her empty beer bottle out of her hand. Had she finished it already?

“Want another one?”

“Sure.”

He went to the kitchen and brought back another beer, then handed it to her and sat down again.
