“Good girl. That’s my kitten.”

His praise was like a drug.

Her bra came off and she forcefully silenced her questions before they could come anywhere near her lips. She did what he asked. Posed how he wanted. Touched herself the way he told her to.

“You’re really fucking sexy, Brielle. I love this.”

When he finished, she assumed he’d want sex. After all, he’d gotten her mostly naked. Taken provocative pictures.

She could do it. She wanted to. It wasn’t that she was drunk, although she was. John was hot. It didn’t matter that he was older than she was. They were both adults. And why not thank him for everything he’d done for her?

But he didn’t touch her. Didn’t try to kiss her or lie her on the couch or take her upstairs to the bed.

Tears stung her eyes as he swiped through the photos. She started picking up her clothes, but he came closer and put a hand on her wrist.

“What’s wrong?”

“I thought you wanted me.”

He touched her cheek. “Kitten, you’re everything I hoped you’d be. Such a good girl. I know you’re going to please me.”

Her heart fluttered. Please him? That sounded so sexual. So grown up and erotic. She wanted that. “Why can’t I please you now?”

His mouth turned up in a grin. “You did. You pleased me very much. Do you want to please me again, next time I visit?”

She nodded. “Yes. How?”

He didn’t answer. Just smiled, puckering the dimples in his cheeks, while she put her clothes back on. He hadn’t said or done anything funny, but her buzz made her want to giggle.

She felt good. Drunk felt good. It was fun to take her clothes off for him—exciting and dangerous. He was such a man, not a boy like her ex who’d cheated.

John wouldn’t do something like that. She knew he wouldn’t.

So why not have fun with the man who’d rescued her. He was hot and he’d called her sexy. And he certainly wasn’t forcing her to do anything against her will.

She sat down with her beer and took a long drink. He said she could please him. She liked that and decided not to worry about what he’d want her to do and why.

CHAPTER 10

Marigold

I waved goodbye to my client as she left the salon. Her new chin-length bob suited her so well. I was excited she’d finally taken the plunge and trusted me enough to give her a new look.

“She sure was happy,” Stacey said. “I love that cut on her.”

“I’m glad she’s happy with it.” I lowered myself into the other chair behind the front desk and took a drink of my water. “Who’s coming next?”

“Betty Newman, but not for an hour.”

While too many breaks between clients wasn’t a good thing, a little break was always nice. I sat back and inhaled deeply. The scent of flowers filled the air, but not because I’d brought in fresh blooms to greet my clients. Preston had sent flowers again. Even though the first one still looked beautiful, another arrangement had arrived at the salon not long after I did.

I’d gone out with him again the night before, this time without the glamor of a helicopter and fancy restaurant. He’d taken me to a late dinner at a cute place in town, a little Italian bistro with my favorite eggplant parmesan.

Even with the contrast in the setting, it had been a lovely date. I was relieved at the simplicity and normalcy of it. I didn’t want to be swept away by expensive displays of extravagance, fun as they were. It was good to get to know Preston better in a more casual setting. Although looking back, it felt like I’d done more of the talking than he had.

Still, his gentlemanly manners had been on full display and I’d had a nice time.

I picked up my copy of the local newspaper, the Tilikum Tribune, and started thumbing through it. I hadn’t paid much attention to our local paper until I’d become friends with Audrey. She worked there and was on her way to taking over for the current editor when he retired in a few years. Out of support for my friend, I’d started buying it, and found I really enjoyed perusing the stories. Now I had two subscriptions, one for my personal use and one to keep out for salon clients.
