“Hello, sweetheart,” she said. “I know I don’t have an appointment, so if you’re busy I’ll just make one. But my hair is driving me batty.”

“Your timing is perfect. I can take you right now.”

“Wonderful.” She sniffed. “What lovely flowers. Do you have a suitor, Miss Marigold?”

I smiled. “I guess I do.”

“She might have two,” Stacey said.

Louise’s eyes brightened. “Two? How exciting.”

“That’s not true, I don’t have two suitors. Someone else sent flowers, but they’re just a thank you.”

“Keep telling yourself that,” Stacey mumbled.

Ignoring Stacey, I gestured to my station. “I’ll take you back.”

“You’re such a dear,” Louise said.

Once she was settled in my chair with a cape around her shoulders, she took her long silver hair out of its bun.

“So what are we thinking?” I asked, running my fingers through her tresses. “Just a trim?”

“A bit more than a trim, my ends are horrific.”

I held up a strand of hair to show where I’d cut it. “About like this? If I take off a few inches, I think you’ll be happy with how it looks and feels.”

“I trust you, honey.”

“Great.”

I took her to the washing station to wash and condition, then got to work. It was a simple cut, and I knew Louise well enough to know how long she’d want it. She usually wore it up, so it needed enough length to make a pretty bun.

“Tell me about this suitor,” she said.

I pressed my lips together in a smile. “His name is Preston Bradford. He’s from out of town, but he’s building a vacation home nearby. We had our second date last night and it was fairly normal. We had a nice dinner together.”

“But what about the first date?”

“A dream. He took me to Seattle in a private helicopter.”

“Did he, now? That’s not something you hear every day.”

“It was a total surprise. And we had such a great time.”

“Who’s the poor chump trying to compete with that?”

“Oh, no. No one’s trying to compete with Preston. The flowers were for something else.”

“Who are they from?”

“Zachary Haven,” Stacey called from the front.

I shot her a look. She just smiled back.

“My Zachary?” Louise asked. “Not a chump at all. And isn’t that an interesting bit of information.”

“He had a minor accident here at the salon recently. The flowers are just a thank you for helping him.”
