“Wait, what are you doing?” Stacey asked.

Opening my eyes, I looked toward the front, then blinked in disbelief.

Zachary Haven grinned at Stacey, then lifted a set of large pruning shears and proceeded to cut the new flowers. With a few snips, they were all on the floor.

With another smile, he winked at me, then walked out the door.

Stacey turned around, her mouth gaping.

Olive giggled in the chair. “Why did he do that?”

“She has two men fighting over her,” Stacey said.

“No, I don’t.”

“Then what was that?” She gestured toward the door.

I sputtered for a second. “I don’t know. He’s a Haven. It’s probably supposed to be some kind of prank.”

“They’re pranking beauty salons now? I thought they just pranked the Baileys.”

“They do.” I let out a frustrated breath. “You expect me to understand Zachary Haven? No one does.”

“He sure is a snack, though,” Olive said.

Despite myself, that made me laugh.

But what was Zachary thinking? If he was trying to win me over, how was cutting my flowers going to help? It just made me mad.

Although, was I mad? I should have been, but it was kind of funny. The way he’d waltzed right in and snipped them off, then left without a word. And that wink? He was ridiculous, but that wink had sent tingles down my spine.

I went back to Olive’s hair. What on earth was wrong with me? “Give me a few Stacey, and I’ll clean it up.”

“That’s okay, I can do it.” Shaking her head, she laughed. “I probably shouldn’t think that was funny, but it was hilarious.”

I knew exactly how she felt.

The door opened again and I thought it might be Zachary. Maybe he’d decided he ought to at least clean up his prank.

But it was definitely not Zachary. It was Preston.

The subtle smile on his face melted away when he saw the remains of his latest flower arrangement all over the floor.

“What the hell happened?”

I opened my mouth to answer—there was no way I was telling him it had been Zachary—but Stacey beat me to it.

“Oh, just Zachary Haven. He strolled in and cut them.” She laughed again. “Sorry, they were so pretty, but it was really funny. I don’t even know why.”

Preston’s gaze moved to me, his eyes intense. “Who’s Zachary Haven?”

The hardness in his voice sent a chill down my spine. “He’s just… um… my best friend Annika’s brother.”

“Why did he cut up the flowers I sent you?”

Anger? Possessiveness? What was that in his voice? “I’m sure he meant it as a joke. He’s like that sometimes.”

With his eyes locked on mine, he took slow steps toward my station. “Is this a problem I need to handle?”
