“Take it.”

“But what is it?”

He produced another one and popped it into his mouth. “It’ll feel amazing.”

She picked up the pill and looked at it. She’d smoked weed tons of times, but this was different.

“Trust me,” John said. “You’ll love it.”

He smiled at her and she couldn’t help but smile back. She put it in her mouth and washed it down with a swig of beer.

“How long does it take to work?”

“Not long.”

He grabbed his empty beer bottle and stood. She expected him to offer to get her another, but instead he stopped and tilted his head, looking at her.

“Stand up for a second.”

She laughed a little and glanced around, then did what he said. “Okay?”

“Change into the pink tank top.”

She looked down at her clothes—a gray t-shirt and joggers. “Why?”

His brown eyes seemed to darken. “Because I told you to.”

A tingle of fear made the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. But why? John would never hurt her. He didn’t even look scary, just serious.

Her head spun a little, but she wasn’t too drunk. Just buzzed. And she didn’t feel the pill yet. She hurried upstairs and dug through the drawers to find the pink tank top. Apparently that was what John liked on her. She’d have to remember that and try to be wearing it the next time he came to the cabin. Not that she knew when he’d stop by. Maybe she’d just wear it every day.

She thought about calling down from the loft so he’d look up, let him watch her change. A little striptease could be fun. And show him she had agency.

But when she looked over the balcony, ready to peel off her shirt, she saw John go to the front door.

Oh no. Was he leaving?

He opened the door and Brielle’s heart felt like it stopped. Fear gripped her and she clutched the tank top to her stomach. Someone was there.

Who was he? Had they found her?

She needed to hide.

Trying not to make a sound, she backed up into the loft. Where could she hide? What if John couldn’t get rid of him?

“Brielle?” John called from below.

She heard the front door close.

“Kitten, where’d you go?”

Letting out a long breath, she quickly changed into the tank top. He got rid of him so easily. She should have known she didn’t need to worry.

But when she came out, she stopped at the top of the stairs. John wasn’t alone. Another man stood next to him. Similar build, slim but fit, probably around the same age.

“It’s okay, this is a friend of mine.” John glanced at him. “Andrew.”

Andrew looked up to the loft and gave her a slight smile. “Hi, Brielle.”
