Stiffening, I caught Luke’s gaze. “You don’t suppose Mateo or Marianna is back, do you?”

Again, the knocking sounded, but the noise seemed nearer.

I looked beneath the kitchen table.

Teddy was wagging his tail, banging it against the table legs.

“You kooky dog.”

Later that night, a rapping at the door woke me.

“Teddy, cut that out.” Half asleep, I rolled over.

The knocking got louder.

“Teddy, stop it!” I covered my ears with a pillow.

The knocking became a pounding.

Cody? I peeked out the window. No one.

As the thumping continued at the door, I flipped on the light, hoping Teddy was the unwitting offender.

But he huddled beneath the table, quaking.

The hammering became so incessant, it shook the door and rattled the threshold.

“Who’s there?”

The noise stopped, but now too anxious to sleep, I lay awake, jumping at every sound.

The next morning, I told Luke.

“That’s it.” He wrapped his arms around me. “Either you move in with me, or I move in permanently with you.”

“I agree.” For the first time since the knocking began, I relaxed. “I’m happy either way.”

“And since we haven’t set a date for the wedding”—his dark eyes glimmered—“I suggest we make it as soon as possible—a week from now.”

“A week! You’re not serious, are you?” I broke away to see his expression. “What about the invitations, wedding dress, venue, flowers, cake—”

“All right, all right.” Grinning, he held up his hands in mock surrender. “How ’bout two weeks?” Again, he slipped his arms around me, hugging me as he gently rocked me left and right. “What do you say? Two weeks from today?”

Weighing the preparations against the timeline, I took a deep breath. “Is that a challenge?”

“Maybe…” He tightened his grip.

“Then there’s no time to lose.” I pecked him on the lips, then poured a cup of coffee. “What about the colors?”

“That’s your domain.” He gave me a crooked smile. “I’m color blind.”

“I was thinking dusty rose and golden taupe. Work for you?”

“Perfect.”

“That was easy.” Grinning, I set down my cup. “What about style?”
