Internally, I’m kicking and screaming at this news. At the way he’s brushing me off like I don’t matter. But outwardly, I remain as cold as ice. Not a single flinch in response to his words.

“That’s fine. I’ve got it,” he reassures me, finally looking up at me for a split second before glancing at something behind me.

“Wow. Okay.”

“I’m doing you a favor, all right? I could have fired you.”

I’ve been Greg’s assistant for three years with no opportunities to move up in the company. It’s not for lack of trying on my end; I applied for three internal positions in the last several months, but I never heard back, even after following up. Now, I’m being shipped off to a brand-new department in a different city. An interview isn’t even required?

Fuck Greg, and fuck this place.

“You should just let me go,” I finally say.

It would be the push I need to start looking for another job. Maybe at an architectural firm or at a design and consultation company. Something I’m actually passionate about. It’s about time I go after something worthwhile.

Greg smirks. “That would cost more than you’re worth. We would have to pay you a hefty severance package, and the company can’t afford that.”

Wow. That’s nice.

I exhale softly, glancing at my clenched fists before releasing my grip and crossing my legs. I remind myself to maintain composure until later, to never reveal my pain or vulnerability on the outside. Emotion equals weakness.

“So my options are to go to New York or quit?”

He nods. “Betty can explain everything to you once she gets here.”

Right on cue, as if the universe was just itching for the perfect moment, the door opens and Mrs. Wilson, also known as Betty from HR, walks in holding a binder and wearing the same navy pantsuit she always wears. She either loves this navy suit, or she has purchased multiples of the same outfit to take out the guessing game in the mornings. Betty looks frazzled and breathless as she walks to Greg’s desk. There is a noticeable coffee stain on her blouse, and I can’t stop staring at it.

“Sorry I’m late. It’s been a crazy day.”

“It’s always crazy in HR. Thank you for making the time for us today, Betty.”

“It’s Mrs. Wilson.”

“Apologies.” I notice the small smirk before Greg erases it off his face. He did it on purpose, knowing it gets under her skin anytime someone calls her by her first name. Our Human Resources department is all about rules and regulations, and Betty probably knows every single one by heart.

She clears her throat, standing beside Greg, and casts her eyes down at me.

“Thanks for joining us, Ms. Jackson. I’m sure you’re wondering what’s going on, so I’ll get to it. You’re needed at the New York office. Your manager here has graciously offered up your services to them. This is a permanent move, and there are no other options available at this time. If you choose not to relocate, you will be dismissed effective immediately at your own discretion.”

I don’t speak, only continue to blink at her mindlessly, trying to imagine myself anywhere but here.

“Normally, we would cover moving expenses, but given the quick circumstances, you’re to relocate at your own expense. If you choose to accept the job, I will email you all the details. You’ll need to be in New York by Monday.”

“It’s Thursday,” I force out.

“I’m aware.”

“Can I get more time to decide?”

“I’m afraid not.”

I force down the fiery anger building inside me, preventing it from clawing up my throat and suffocating me. I wish it fucking would, then I wouldn’t have to sit here and deal with this bullshit.

“Of course, you can choose to decline the offer, but that is entirely up to you.” Greg speaks.

“Understood.”

“Are you accepting?”
