“But we’re at home. In casual clothes. Not doing anything special.”

He releases my hand and starts walking out of the room, disappearing down the dark hallway.

“Where are you going?” Before I know it, I’m chasing the guy as he strolls into my bedroom, no care for privacy. What if my vibrator is sitting on my nightstand?

“Hey! You can’t just—” I halt abruptly at my open doorway, finding him scanning through the stacks of books resting in the corner of my room. I just pulled them all out of boxes the other day.

“What is all this?”

“They’re called books. You should pick one up sometime.”

Dom glares at me from over his shoulder. “What genres?”

“Mostly horror. Some sci-fi. I recently picked up?—”

“You don’t have any romance?” he cuts me off.

“Romance?”

“Yes…you know…the stories about love and couples and shit.”

“No. I don’t read unrealistic books.”

He pivots, resting his elbow on his knee and fixing me with a raised eyebrow as he presents It by Stephen King.

“And this is realistic?”

Rolling my eyes, I cross my arms and lean against my doorway. “I don’t have to explain my reading preferences to you. If you’re not planning on borrowing a book, leave my collection alone.”

He continues to rummage through my stacks of books for what feels like hours. But then he stands, holding a torn and battered copy of Wuthering Heights.

Oh, no.

Not that book. I was certain I had packed it away in my memory box, tucked away safely in the back of my closet.

“I’m pretty sure this is classified as romance.” Dominik has a stupid, obnoxious grin on his face as he approaches me. “How many times have you read this? It looks fucking abused, Zoe. My first gift as your fake boyfriend will be to buy you a brand-new copy of this book.”

Marching over to him, I try to snatch the book out of his hand, but he raises his arm, glaring down at me and smiling. I get a whiff of his intoxicating, sandalwood cologne.

Fuck, he smells good.

Taking a large step back, I put space between us before extending my open hand to him.

“Please give it back.”

He shakes his head. “No. We’ll need it as a prop.”

“What for?”

“Tell me, Zo… Why this one out of all the romance books?”

I move to turn away from him, but his hand grips my arm.

“I’ll need to get to know you a bit, and you’ll have to do the same with me for this to work. You can trust me as much as I intend to trust you, and we’re going to start with this.”

Small shivers cascade down my body at the sound of his soft voice commanding me.

I turn to face him, two seconds away from strangling him.
