Roxie: Me too. Stay out oftrouble, Dunn

Chris: Never

Liz considers me with a gleam inher eye. “Who was that?”

“No one,” I respond, trying tolook serious. “Just Chris. The neighbor. He wants to go furnitureshopping next week.”

“Mm-hmm,” she mutters and takes aswig of beer. A tiny smile dances in the corners of her mouth.

“What?”

“Oh, nothing, other than youbeaming,” she says. “So, tell me about this new neighbor. We nevermet him, as all the paperwork for the condo sale went throughagents.”

“Nothing much to tell. I’veactually known him since college. He dated my roommate. Just afterI stopped playing basketball.”

“So you were friends?”

“Maybe? I don’t know. He was easyto talk to. We played video games a lot. He’s a lawyer now.”

“Is he hot?”

I shrug. “I didn’t notice.” I verymuch did notice. By the mailboxes, at his door, and thenagain when he was on his way to the gym. Dunnoying Chris is allgrown up and looks pretty goddamn delicious.

“You’re so lying,” Liz sayswith a smirk. “You can’t wait to get your hands on his wood …furniture.”

We both burst out laughing, andwhen Joe comes back out with our beer, he smiles and shakes hishead.

Chapter Five

Chris

“Wow!” I say. “I love yourplace.”

“I hate to break it to you, but itlooks exactly like yours,” Roxie replies from her bedroom, whereshe's getting ready for our shopping excursion.

“This is nothing like myplace,” I say. “You’ve got real adult furniture.” She has adining-room set in a dark wood finish that looks like chocolate, and a living-room set comprising a sofa and two armchairs innatural brown leather that is velvety soft to the touch. There isart on the walls, decorative lamps, and a nice rug with an abstractpattern that finally makes me understand what people mean when theysay a rug pulls the room together.

When I asked Roxie to come help melook at furniture, I mostly wanted to have some company. But nowthat I realize she’s got some serious decorating chops, I feelexcited and more than a little awestruck. Every new thing I learnabout her makes me like her more.
