“I think that would be wonderful.I have to check my team’s calendar, as we’re in full swing rightnow, but if there are no conflicts, I’d love to.”

“Yes!” Lyle pumps his fist invictory.

Chris smiles at me warmly, and Ican only bear his gaze for a few seconds before I have to lookaway, otherwise I might mount him on the spot.

Liz smiles. “So, what does itsay?”

I’m playing dumb. “What does whatsay?”

“Chris’s text.”

“How do you know it’s him?”

“Puh-leez,” she says, rolling hereyes. “In the words of my grandma, you look as happy as a pig inshit.”

I chuckle. “Well, I haven’t reallyseen him since Thanksgiving. Except for the game. But I asked forspace and he’s given it to me.”

“So you decided to go back?”

“Yes. Maybe. I don’t know.”

“What’s stopping you?”

“I don’t know.”

“You were so miserable all lastmonth.”

“Do you want me to stop badgeringyou?”

“Yes! Please! Ugh.”

Liz chuckles.

We sit in companionable science inLiz’s living room, watching the snow fall. She’s drinking gingertea, trying to control the nausea that’s left her looking vaguelygreenish instead of her usual peach-cheeked self. I’m not a fan ofginger tea, but I’m drinking it in solidarity.

“You can come with us to Joe’sparents’ for Christmas, you know,” she says.

“I know. Thank you. But I don’twant to impose. I already feel like I’m a stray cat that you andJoe can’t get rid of.”

“If you’re a cat, I should remindyou I can’t handle your shit in my delicate state.”

We both laugh.

“I honestly wouldn’t mind it ifyou moved in with us, and I don’t think Joe would either,” Lizsays.

“You say that now, but you’venever had to deal with my hair in the bathroom.”

“Seriously, what will you do forChristmas?”

“What I usually do. Order Chinesetakeout and catch up on work. Or maybe watch a movie.”
