“We want to move closer to ourfriends who live on the far west side,” Chris adds. “We’re waitingfor a suitable house in their neighborhood. And Roxie’s got acoaching gig at the high school there, so it will beconvenient.”

“Oh, that’s cool,” Emily says.“What do you coach?”

“Girls’ basketball,” I reply.

“Did you play, too?”

“I did. High school and college abit.”

“I suppose it makes sense, sinceyou’re so tall.”

“She still plays for fun,” Chrisadds, then turns to me and smiles. “Well, not right now. But again, very soon.”

Emily looks confused. “Why aren’tyou playing right now?”

I turn my hips toward her and patmy small belly.

Emily’s eyes shoot wide inrecognition. “Oh, my God, congratulations!”

“Thanks,” I say. “We’re prettyexcited. Still almost five months to go, though.”

“Sorry, ladies, but this thing isgetting heavy.” Chris nods toward the bag, then toward theelevators. “It was good to see you, Emily.”

“Bye, guys,” Emily says as shewaves us goodbye, and I wave back.

“You know she’s got a crush onyou,” I tell Chris as we get on the elevator.

He raises an eyebrow. “Who, Emily?Well, she’s got excellent taste.” Then he grins at me. “What, areyou jealous?”

“Not at all. Just checking ifyou’ve noticed.”

He leans over and kisses me. “Youknow I don’t notice anyone but you.”

“Excellent answer. A lie, butstill excellent.”

“That’s it. As soon as I put downthis ridiculous bag of pellets, I will tickle you until you believeme.”

The elevator doors open, and I runaway, mock screaming, while he clumsily chases me. By the time Iunlock the door, he catches up, and we stumble into the apartmenttogether, laughing.

He drops the bag on the floor andgives me a scorching look, and we both know there’s no need totickle me. I already believe him.
