After I took it, he tugged me to the other side of the tree. As soon as we were in sight of the three women, he pulled me against him, cupped my cheek, and said, “Kiss me like you mean it, baby. I’ve missed you.”

For a second, the heat and yearning in his eyes threw me off. Then I remembered where we were and who watched and how he was an actor. So I gripped his coat, stood on tip-toe, and he closed the distance.

As soon as Nolan’s mouth crashed down on mine, everything else faded away. He was warm and smelled delicious, and the way he held me against his body made me feel precious.

His tongue demanded entrance, and I opened, moaning as soon as his tongue found mine. He flicked and licked and tangled. And I met him stroke for stroke, needing more, much more, but knowing it would never go beyond kissing.

Except when his hard cock pressed against me, I couldn’t resist rubbing and torturing him. His moans and groans and the intensity of his kisses drove me just as crazy. Before I knew it, he lifted me up, and I instinctively wrapped my legs around his waist. Somewhere in my mind I knew I was in public and that people were watching. Hell, they’d probably be taking a video, and it’d be all over the internet within the hour.

And yet, I couldn’t care less. I wrapped my arms around Nolan’s neck, ground more against him, and my heart raced as I grew wetter and turned on. It wouldn’t take much more to push me over the edge.

Nolan’s possessive hands on my ass rocked me against his cock. With a moan, I got lost in his kisses and hard chest, and for a short while, imagined this was my life—a boyfriend who couldn’t get enough of me, didn’t care who knew it, and could nearly make me come from kisses and a little friction, all with our clothes still on.

Someone yelled, “Nolan Drake, look here!” and Nolan broke the kiss.

Rather than looking around, he laid his forehead against mine and we both tried to catch our breaths. He stared into my eyes, but I couldn’t read his expression. I guess he’d stopped acting.

It was on the tip of my tongue to ask what he was thinking, but I held back.

Instead, I finally murmured, “You didn’t have to do that.”

He hugged me closer. “We’ll talk about it more later. What do you want to do now, Katie? They’re still watching.”

All of my earlier nerves and insecurities had vanished. I replied softly, “Put me down and follow my lead.”

“Anything you want, baby. I’m here for you.”

I smiled at his words. However, as soon as my feet touched the ground, I turned to face the three women who shouldn’t have any power over me. And thanks to Nolan, I was in control and no longer stuck reliving old memories.

I walked over to Kristina. Nolan followed me and stopped by my side. I nearly took his hand, but decided I needed to do this for myself. “Hello, Kris. Do you really have nothing better to do than call me fat and want to throw shit at me? I mean, I know a pair of eleven-year-olds who wouldn’t even do that kind of stuff.”

Kristina blinked a second and then narrowed her eyes. She gave me a once-over. “Well, the first is certainly true, Katie. Oh wait, what was it that we called you? Oh, that’s right—Fat Kat. I’ll make sure to let Wendy know about that name and the whole world will start calling you it too.”

Nolan growled, but I put up a hand. Anger churned my belly, but it was better than fear or tears. “I won’t ever resort to name calling, but there are plenty of facts I could bring up about you. Your sister was drunk at the bar one night and let a few secrets slip out…”

Kristina took a step forward. “Try it, Fat Kat. You’ll lose in the end.”

It would be so easy to call her a name and cross the line, to become a bully and spill the secret of how one of her children was fathered by someone other than her husband.

But I couldn’t do that to an innocent child. However, there was another piece of information I knew, something that would only affect Kristina. So I whispered for her ears only, “I know you paid someone to take the SAT for you. You know, the score that got you into Stanford, where you met your husband? Don’t you sit on some alumni board or something like that? Imagine what they’d say if they learned the truth.”

Kristina paled a little before her cheeks turned bright red. “My grades got me there, Fat Kat. Try it. My husband is a powerful lawyer, and you won’t stand a chance.”

Nolan touched my hand, and I glanced at him. He raised his eyebrows in question.

He wanted to help me. And maybe it was crazy, but I trusted him. So I nodded.

Nolan leaned forward. “I know better lawyers. Ones who can ferret out any kind of secret, too. Mess with my woman, and you’ll regret it.”

I took his hand without thinking, and Nolan threaded his fingers through mine. As he squeezed gently, I felt a little calmer. So I said, “Just go back to your life, Kris, and I’ll do the same. You’ve always hated Starry Hills and called us a hole-in-the-wall town. So just go and leave us alone.”

Kristina opened her mouth, but Jordan stepped forward and whispered something. Both women noticed all the people watching and more than a few cell phones pointed in our direction.

Kristina said, “Watch your back, Fat Kat. That’s all I’ll say.”

With that, the three women left. Nolan tugged me away from the crowd until we found a quiet corner next to the Starry Wolfe wine booth. Zach waved, but at our expressions, he frowned. Nolan made some gestures to his brother—probably some kind of secret Wolfe brother code—and tugged me behind the booth, which hid us from view.

Nolan ran the back of his fingers against my cheek. “Are you okay, baby?”
