Page 3 of Marry Me Forever

The moonlight caressed her face, softening her features a little. Her expression was pensive, as if silently asking the moon about some life-changing decision.

Stop it. You’re just delaying things. Get on with it.

So I walked up to Katie Evans, the woman I planned to ask to fake marry me, and hoped she’d say yes.

Chapter Two

Katie

It shouldn’t hurt that even my closest friends had expected me to do something outrageous instead of thoughtful for the twins’ birthday party, and yet it did.

Oh, I knew everyone expected me to be silly and outgoing and to do things most people found embarrassing. I’d been doing it for years, ever since middle school, in fact.

And yet, that wasn’t all of who I was, not even close.

Needing a break, I walked out to the porch for some fresh air. I stopped in front of the fire pit, needing some warmth against the chilly October night, and stared up at the moon.

Ever since I’d been a little kid, the moon and stars had calmed me. Something about the patterns I could make from the stars, or how constant the moon was with its cycles and shapes. No matter how hectic my life was, the moon would always be there, right on schedule.

As I scanned the stars, looking for new patterns—not the actual constellations—someone walked up to me. I mentally sighed. It looked like my quiet time was over.

I pasted a smile on my face and turned to find Nolan Wolfe studying me.

He was tall with dark hair, like all the Wolfe brothers. Muscled, too. More so than Beck, but not West; Nolan was somewhere in between.

Although why he was here on the porch, staring down at me, I had no idea. Maybe he was mad at me for revealing his sponsorship of Wyatt’s soccer team. But really, once the uniforms were delivered, everyone would’ve seen his company’s name anyway.

I waved. “Hi, Nolan. Did you get lost?”

He blinked and shook his head. “No. I wanted to talk with you.”

Since we’d mostly texted about the sponsorship, it was weird he wanted to chat in person. Unlike the younger Wolfe siblings—Abby, Zach, and Zane—I never hung out much with Nolan growing up. We weren’t exactly friends. “Talk with me about what? Did something go wrong with the soccer uniform orders? Or the coach we hired? Or any of the equipment?”

“No, no, that’s all good. Not even my assistant could find a loose end to tie up, and she’s the queen of finding that kind of stuff.”

Not wanting to risk hearing how Nolan thought I was some scatterbrained woman or something, I said, “Then just spit it out. You know I don’t like to beat around the bush.”

He smiled, and maybe it was the flickering flames from the fire, but my heart skipped a beat at how handsome he looked.

I quickly pushed that thought aside. This was Nolan, after all. The boy who’d constantly had his nose in a book. One who’d always told me to stop bugging him whenever I asked him to play with me.

The one who’d left town and broke his sister’s heart.

Not to mention he’s a world-famous movie star and is miles out of your league.

“Well? What is it?”

Nolan cleared his throat, checked to see no one was about, and then lowered his voice. I had to lean closer to hear him say, “I have a problem that I hope you can help me with.”

“Now that sounds interesting. What is it?”

He cleared his throat again and tugged his shirtsleeves down. The untucked dress shirt really did emphasize his broad shoulders.

Be good, Katie.

“First, promise to hear me out before you laugh or run away.”

“Hmm. That sounds intriguing. What, are you going to tie me up, whisk me off to a love nest, and do dirty things to me?”
