I smiled. “And yet, you still knocked on wood.”

“Damn straight. I’m not taking any chances.”

I laughed, but then quickly moaned. “Don’t do that. It hurts to laugh.”

“Sorry, baby. I’ll try my best not to charm you off your feet. Which is probably easy, given I don’t have Zach-levels of charisma.”

“I like your type of charm. And you might not have Zach’s outgoing personality, but you’re sweet, Nolan.” He made a face, and I added, “It’s not a bad thing, I promise.”

“If you say so. Women always seem to want the assholes or fixer uppers.”

“Well, I like you just as you are, Nolan Wolfe.” I couldn’t hold back a yawn. “But as much as I want to keep talking, I’m tired.”

He stood, retrieved a cool cloth from the side table, and gently wiped my forehead, cheeks, and neck. I moaned in relief.

For a second, our eyes met and time slowed. No one had really ever taken care of me like this since I was a kid. And even then, no one had looked at me with such tenderness like Nolan was doing right now.

It would be so easy to fall for him.

Thankfully, Nolan broke eye contact to discard the cloth in the bathroom. Once he returned, he crawled to the other side of the bed—above the covers—and situated a blanket over him that he’d found somewhere.

If I wasn’t so sick and smelly, I’d tell him to get under the covers with me.

Nolan leaned over, kissed my forehead, and whispered, “Sweet dreams, baby.”

“You too.”

And soon I fell asleep to dreams of Nolan holding me close in bed, his warm body around mine, and feeling safe and wanted and treasured in a way I’d only ever read about in books.

Chapter Fourteen

Nolan

Beck: You’d better get your ass over here for December 23rd.

Me: Why? I usually come over on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

Zach: Aunt Lori says it’s a big surprise, one for all of us.

Abby: Not even I could get her to spill the secret, and I tried. Hard. But she’s been texting a lot.

West: She texts all the time.

Abby: This is different. No smiles or laughter, just furrowed brows. Almost like she’s willing for something to happen.

Zach: Uh oh. That can’t be good. She’s not putting together a surprise wedding for West and Emmy, is she?

West: Fuck no. She’d better not. I want Emmy as my wife, but on her terms.

Beck: I doubt she’d do that. She’s been gushing about Emmy and West’s wedding date and their soon-to-be conceived children.

West: WTF?

Zach: Well, your super sperm got two kids at one go before. Maybe she’s banking on that again.

Me: That’s not how it works.

Zach: Well, Wolfe family members are rather fertile. There are six of us. And even our Wolfe aunt in Sun Falls had five kids.
