But Nolan tended to be protective only when needed. Or, at least, that’s what I remembered of him looking out for Abby when we were all kids.

He gestured with his head toward the patio door. “Well, then I’m heading back inside. But remember to ask me any questions you have, okay?”

“Okay.”

Nolan nodded, gave me one last, long look, and went into the house. I returned to watching the flames, trying to get my head straight.

I’d probably have more questions later, for sure. But was I really considering this? Ready to upend my life, lie to my friends and family, and face the wrath of Wendy Webster’s fans?

Maybe. Yes, maybe. If I didn’t seize this chance, I might never see the world beyond a few states in the US.

Not only that, but I had a feeling that I’d never really figure out what I wanted to do with my life if I didn’t see what the world had to offer beyond Starry Hills.

Pretending to be engaged to Nolan for six months wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Would it?

Chapter Three

Katie

Me: So what if someone figures out your plan?

Nolan: They won’t.

Me: Just because you say it won’t happen doesn’t mean it’ll work out that way.

Nolan: I have faith in you, and I have faith in me. That’s enough.

Me: What about my family? I can’t just abandon them when I feel like it. They rely on my awesome tour guide skills.

Nolan: I’ll hire someone to help when you’re gone. And they’ll be the best.

Me: What, an actor who owes you a favor?

Nolan: Something like that. It should help your family’s dairy, though, and give them some free PR.

Me: You’re full of secrets and plots, aren’t you?

Nolan: Not usually.

Me: And how much PDA will there be?

Nolan: Whatever you’re comfortable with. Although kisses and holding hands would make it more believable. I can even come up with a backstory, no problem.

Me: Are you treating this like your next movie?

Nolan: I’m afraid to answer that.

Me: Fine. Last question: Will your family hate me after this?

Nolan: No. Never. Once I explain how it had to be authentic, they’ll forgive you. I’ll make sure to take all the blame.

Me: Why?

Nolan: Because you’re more important to them and to Starry Hills.

Me: Why would you say that?
