When he returned, I took the gun carefully, avoiding brushing fingers withit. Chester/not-Chester. I would never look at the face again and trust it. My finger itched and it took all my common sense given the situation to not raise the gun and put a bullet in him.

Let me fuck your brains with some metal, mister motherfucking killer.

Instead, I smiled at The Soldier diplomatically.

The gun was heavier and colder than I remembered. I let the gun dangle from my hand, at the end of my arm, waist-high but easily brought up to bear on...anyone I needed to shoot.

“You missed some,” Val said from behind me, and I realized mine was the only gun brought over.

Why?

“I would rather only one of you be armed.” The Soldier’s mouth set into a wry smile.

“I don’t care for your rathers.” Val’s voice was low and tight.

He would be a better shot. I was just about to give him my gun when The Soldier clicked her fingers again.

“What was that for?” Instinctively, I raised my gun, swinging my arm to point at everyone. I could swear there was a waft of some mental instruction going out to the dream creatures.

Shit, even with no visible weapons on us, I and Val were outgunned.

And then it happened.

In a massive flood of light, the dream creatures poured to Val.

“No!” My scream was lost in the torrent of sound.

The force rocked me as the flash pushed Val back into the secret room. I staggered, fireflies of light dancing across my retinas. Blinking, I cleared my vision just in time to see Chester slam shut the metal door.

It locked, purring, and the keypad glowed acknowledging a successful seal.

“Get him out of there.” Teeth gritted, I aimed the Ruger at the stomach of The Soldier.

Wait.Wait. The Soldier was an Immortal.

I raised my aim and centered the gun on The Soldier’s head. “Get. Him. Out.”

The Soldier held her hands up, palm outward. “We are on the same side. The Cucitrice and I have always fought on the same side.”

“I’m not the Cucitrice.”

“You are locked into her destiny.”

“I don’t want it.”

“That is not the choice you have today. Today your choice is to free the world from the monstrosity called the Nightmare King.”

I blinked, mouth drying. The Soldier knew. This was why...everything, but I had to ask. “How do you know?”

The Soldier reached into her pocket and pulled out some gold antique eyeglasses.

Of course, the object did more than see into the future, it saw into hosts.

“Inside him, your friend hides a creature that would destroy the human world. The Nightmare King seeks to rule, and I fear he can accomplish this. We haven’t seen him since the Cucitrice shot him and we had hoped he’d died but...” The Soldier shrugged.

“Can you help us? Him?”

The Soldier stepped closer. “Not in the way you hope. The Nightmare King is almost unkillable, and now we know almost unstoppable.”
