As we walked to the car, I gave it more thought.

Those bones were all that was left of Yvaine. Though years had passed, if anything, I’d become more affected by her kidnapping, and what was likely to be evidence of her death.

This...nightmare and dream creature problem was a newcomer on the scene. No matter how scary or big it might become, it came second on my list.

I compressed my lips. I’d finish what I’d started. Clean up. Arrange things. Tie off the loose end, preferably by killing it. On a cold day in hell, I’d stop chasing him.

Though Neme refused to get in the Dodge, and circled around Val as if wary, I was certain the wolf would follow somehow.

Once I had climbed in and slammed the door, I leaned forward and watched Neme from the side-view mirror as she paced around the back of car.

“You’re watching her like she’s going to disappear.”

I almost snorted at the irony that Val’s words were symptomatic of him watching me, as if I would get away from him. I got it though, I did—if I only fucked people I trusted, I’d be purer than a nun.

“I haven’t seen Neme since the first day, and even then I think I only dreamed it.”

“No, I saw her following you. She was there.”

For a few moments the only sound was gravel under our tires.

“I haven’t touched the wolf,” he mused.

I turned to look at him.

“But I’ve touched you.”

I waited. I could sense him moving the pieces, trying to make them fit.

“I have a theory. You heard of Occam’s razor?”

“The simplest reason is usually the right one?”

“That’s it, close enough.”

“So what’s the simplest reason, Sherlock?”

His lips twitched. “I’m still touching you.”

I looked at his hands on the wheel. “Come again?”

“Exactly. Only so much you can clean with a rag and some water.”

I laughed. “Trust a guy to think he’s got magic jizz.”

He only smiled.

“You don’t think the simplest reason is she can control her appearance? She seems a mix of nightmare and dream, from her coloring. Black, red, white. Maybe she’s got the magic powers.”

“Maybe.” He shrugged. “Except with all those powers, she didn’t show up until now.”

My humor left as my gaze flicked to the wolf running beside us.

“You tell me if she gets a little blurry.”

“You can be a real dick.”

“At your service.”
