Page 64 of Nightmare Rising

There was this idea I had, to get rid of this thing, but that would have to wait while I tracked down Zara, again, and retrieved my Dodge.

Bitch. Pretty, sexy. But still a bitch.

Yeah, I was angry.

I understood her fear, but she’d bailed on me. Underlined thepartin partners.

Luckily I had a tracking tag on both the Dodge and her backpack.

I’d be seeing Zara again soon and asking for explanations...lots of them. Serious explanations.

Why did she think she was safe without me watching her back?

She’d forgotten her biggest weakness—she couldn’t see the nightmares, but they could see her. Who was going to save her?

Neme?

I looked about, but the wolf was gone too, along with the shark-toothed fairies. Maybe the wolf would guard Zara. Maybe the wolf would guard Zara against me.

I picked up my Taurus. Let the cards fall where they wanted...I was coming.

CHAPTER23

Chester

I rolled backfrom my computer workstation with the three linked screens. What Zara had asked for hadn’t been simple or without risk, but I’d do most anything for her. She was my one friend, my Madonna in shorts and T. The one girl who’d never told me to fuck off.

A man appreciated that.

The delivered sub with BLT and extra mayo waited. I pulled a bottle of soda from the fridge and strolled to the door into my back area. The combo with handprint and passcode took a minute to get through, but I figured that’d give me enough time to drop the incinerator I had ready. A flick of the switch andboom, gone. I’d had years to calculate the temperature it’d reach within seconds if I modeled it on a thermobaric weapon or fuel-air bomb.

Everything would go—me, the cops, the old lady upstairs. I loved my few tenants, but it was the risk you took with life. Things sometimes went bang.

“Bing, bang, boom,” I muttered and toed shut the door. I took a bite from the sub, rewrapped it, and placed it on the central table.

Smiling, I rotated in place, admiring my montage of the life of Zara. The walls were her monument. Every day of importance since I met her was there.

The day we met at high school, though she’d not seen me.

The day she first recognized me after she graduated.

The day I kidnapped her dumbass friend. Kissing between girls was okay, but not for Zara.

She was mine.

The day I first wrote her a letter.

More days, more.

The day I buried her friend at the farm.

The day I discovered her new friend, Valor Lacroix.

“I’ll be watching you, man.” I poked a finger at the guy’s photograph on the wall then picked some lettuce from my teeth. “CIA? Huh. Don’t think you’re better. You’re shit. You’re fucking shit.”

Yeah, I had to watch the boyfriend types.

Zara was worth more than them. I had to keep her mine, not theirs. A little sex, sure, it was healthy. Too much, though, and they were gone. Like Damien. Like Yvaine.
