Simon’s eyes burn with the same ferocious determination. “He’ll pay for hurting our Rory.”

“Let’s go!” I say, walking toward my truck.

Oliver barks out a command, signaling our men to follow us. He and Simon climb into the truck with me and together, we set off toward Vaughn’s villa.

We’re quiet through the entire ride.

As the familiar sights of Maplewood’s streets come into view, I notice the way people are staring at our fleet of trucks. It’s unusual for them to see military trucks trundling down the roads like this. Most of the men and women look anxious and I wish I could assure them that they’re all going to be safe.

We’re almost near Vaughn’s neighborhood when my phone rings.

Taking it out, I see that it’s Philip, Rory’s dad.

“Answer the call,” I say, handing my phone to Oliver.

“Hello, Mr. Mayor,” Oliver says in a forced cheerful tone. “How’ve you been?”

“Do you know anything about the military trucks in Maplewood?” Philip’s voice sounds through the phone’s loudspeaker. “They all have your pack’s logo on them, so I thought I’d ask you about them.”

“Ehh, we’re on a mission right now. It’s kind of classified, so we can’t explain anything just yet.”

There’s a pause. “Is Rory safe?” Philip’s grim voice asks.

“She’s safe, Sir,” Oliver replies. “She’s back home and is being protected by our forces.”

“What about you guys? Are you all going to this mission?”

“Yeah, we’re all a part of it.”

“Is it going to be dangerous?”

“We hope not,” Oliver says in a quiet tone.

“You guys must be careful,” he says in a low, demanding tone. “Don’t you dare get hurt! Do you understand?”

Oliver chuckles. “We love you too, Philip.”

Philip makes a funny noise before clearing his throat loudly. “Is this a time to kid around, Simon?” he says with an angry huff. “You must not get hurt and make my child cry. Do you understand?”

“This is Oliver and yes, we’ll do our best to not get hurt.” Taking a deep breath, he adds, “How about I call you after we’re done? Right now, we need to focus on our mission.”

“Right. Be safe, Oliver. And tell your brothers to be careful too.”

“Aye, Mr. Mayor.” Switching off the call, Oliver hands me the phone.

“If the news of our arrival has reached the mayor, I’m sure Vaughn knows we’re coming for him,” Simon says from beside me.

“Tell our men to be ready to fire the moment we get close to his property.”

He nods, grabs his walkie-talkie, and gives out my orders.

A helicopter flies low over our heads as I bring the truck to a stop outside Vaughn’s estate. Burton Pack’s emblem glistens on its tail end, reassuring me of our backup support immediately.

My gaze fixes on the dozen armed men in black camo outfits who are standing outside the gate. They have their guns out and pointing toward us. I’m glad I predicted their behavior and alerted our troops beforehand.

My brothers and I stay in our vehicle while our men file out from the trucks behind us. They gather under the command of one of our sergeants and stand their ground against Vaughn’s guards.

“Surrender to us or be prepared to die!” Sergeant Willis barks at the rebels.
