Struggling to regain my sanity and end the kiss, I filled my head with non-sexy thoughts. Donkeys, Wilson asking for projected sales figures, cleaning horse stalls. I held her nape in one hand, taking my time to ease back from the full-throttle kiss.

“We should probably finish unloading the boxes.” My voice was low, more rumble than speech. My pulse pounded in the erection pressing hard against my zipper.

“I was going to tell you about the food trucks.” Hers was a breathless whisper.

“Interesting.” I licked a line up her neck and tasted her sweet, salty skin. The up-against-the-wall idea resurfaced. There was plenty to like about that idea. But… I could do better.

“Yes, a guy in Austin wants to help organize…”

I nipped her neck and she trailed off. Her moans were more to my taste than her marketing plans.

“When we finish here, I have a surprise if you’re free for the afternoon.”

“All afternoon?” She pushed a hand between us, making space. Her forehead was lined with deep, concerned wrinkles.

“Or until you tell me to stop.”

“Stop?” The way she repeated back what I’d already said as a question made me nervous that I’d screwed up again. Last time I offered more, she ran; I hoped this time I’d done a better job of convincing her. That kiss had been story-book-romance perfect in my mind. Hot and heavy without crossing over into completely tawdry.

“You said just sex. I want to make you come all afternoon.” I held her gaze, not playing any games. She wanted sex, and so did I. Look at me, not overthinking it.

“That simple.” She shook her head and took a small step back.

“Yes.” Mayday! Mayday! Man going down in flames.

“You’re sure?”

“I want you.” There wasn’t anything more I could say to convince her. She believed me or she didn’t.

She slowly nodded; it was almost a yes. The same noisy thoughts that sent her running last night had to be filling her head. I could see shadows of them in her eyes.

“Don’t overthink it.” I left off the asshole part of Lara’s excellent advice.

She chuckled. “I’ve been doing a lot of going on instinct lately. My instincts say run. But I don’t want to run from you.”

I pulled Rae to my chest and pressed my lips to hers in a brief closed-mouth touch.

“Then don’t.”

“You make it sound simple.”

“It can be.” I traced the neckline of her shirt where it dipped in the front with my fingertip, and she visibly shuddered. Her responses made it obvious what she wanted. No one could fake desire like that. Our bodies told the truth.

“I’m free this afternoon. UntilJeopardy!comes on.” She mumbled the last bit, her eyes glued to my fingertip coasting over her skin.

The fact she made watching that stupid TV show a priority made me smile. Three days a week, I’d said in the note I left her in Dallas. That she’d done it made an odd warmth different from lust bloom in my chest.

“That’s perfect.”

I’d never unloaded the bed of my pickup so fast. In record time, I had the remaining boxes stacked in the dancehall, the dogs loaded into the back seat, and Rae in the front.

“You ready for your surprise?” I started the truck, putting one hand on her bare leg before pulling out onto the ranch road for the drive to the far side of the property.

“I thought you were my surprise.”

I hit her with another heartbreaker smile and squeezed her leg. The songTake Me Home, Country Roadsplayed on the radio, and I turned it up, tapping out the beat of the song on her leg with my fingertips. The song, the open space, and her presence combined to erase any lingering bad mood.

I turned off the main road onto a small dirt lane under a canopy of oak trees. The road, by design, was well hidden and poorly maintained to keep people away. I slowed and took care navigating the potholes.
