“Hopefully not you?”

“Definitely not me.” She laughed and wrapped her arms around my neck, pressing our bodies together. It was like a puzzle piece falling into place how perfectly we fit together.

Her lips were scarcely an inch from my ear when she whispered the most incredible news I’d heard all summer. “I’m staying in Elmer.”

I closed my arms around her waist, hoisted her up, and spun us around. She gasped and grabbed on tight, knocking my hat off my head. For the first time in weeks, my lungs expanded to their normal size and I could breathe.

She was staying.

I wished I could find words to express some of what her decision meant to me. Or, fuck words, I wanted to worship her body with mine until she understood.

“For how long?” I let her slide down my body until her feet were on the ground. My hands rested on her waist. Now that I was touching her, I couldn’t stop.

“Total change of plans. Wilson needs me.” Implied by her tone was the unspoken question:can you believe it, and I could; she was incredible. “He asked me to stay the other night at the harvest. I don’t want to leave what I’m building here to be a cog in the machine somewhere else.” Her excitement was a big, bright, tangible thing. She wanted a place at Blue Star.

“That’s good.” Good was an understatement. I’d worried that if I truly let all my desires run free, I would be totally obsessed with her about the time she packed up and left my sorry ass to go to California. But now she wasn’t only staying, she had found a purpose and a passion in Elmer.

“And there’s this cowboy…” A sweet and sassy grin twisted her kissable lips.

“Yes, ma’am?” I pulled her close, my hand sliding up to cup her nape. Everywhere our bodies touched flamed with pent-up desire.

“Oh, shut up and kiss me.”

A smart man does as he’s told.

I tilted my head and fit our lips together in an epic kiss. A kiss that blocked out the past and made promises about the future. Being with Rae made me determined not to take less. Not to leave any of my dreams sitting on the shelf, getting dusty. And this kiss was my chance to show her how grateful I was and how much I missed her.

Slow and tender wasn’t an option. I took, and so did she. In two steps we were up against the clapboard house siding. Our tongues tangled and our teeth clacked. My hand at hernape kept her head still for our mutual assault, but her body undulated against mine, making my nerves go haywire. I cupped her denim-covered ass and groaned into her mouth. It was a homecoming.

She hitched her knee up and pressed her core against my thigh. I’d swear I felt her: hot, wet, and ready for me through the layers of denim separating us.

“I fucking missed you,” I murmured against her throat.

“So much.” The back of her head lolled on the wall, and she arched against me.

“I want you more now than the first night we were together. When I get you naked, I’m going to take my time, make you come until you forget your name.”

She whimpered. I guided her hips as she ground the seam of her jeans into my thigh for a few more torturous moments.

“But I’m doing this right. First, we go on three dates.” I pressed a chaste kiss to her lips and detangled our hot, heaving bodies.

She melted into the wall, a pout on her swollen lips.

If she’d been wearing a skirt, I’d never have had the willpower to pull this move. I’d have stripped off her panties right there on the front porch. Two pairs of Wrangler jeans were the only things keeping my grand plan on track.

She whimpered and thumped her head on the wood siding. “But what if I want—”

I pressed a finger over her lips to stop her from asking, because I’d fold like a lawn chair if she did. From the first moment I saw her, she’d had the power to bring me to my knees.

“Let me have three dates. Please.” My voice hitched thick with barely contained emotions.

“Three dates?” Her eyes locked on mine.

I nodded.

“Yeah. I can do that.” She smiled the kind of smile that glowed from within. It lit up her eyes and pinked her cheeks. I’d made the right choice.

Hand in hand, we strolled in the early morning light from the guest house to my place, not saying anything. The sunrise that morning was pink and gold, truly spectacular, and I decided it was a good omen.
