“You’re safe here, Thalia. I swear on my life, no one will ever touch you without your permission again. Not in my house.”

I stare at him, trying to gauge the truth behind his words. I want so badly to believe that my nightmare really is over, that I can be safe and start to rebuild my life, but fear keeps holding me back.

Rafe squeezes my hands before returning to his seat.

“You said you were studying to be a nurse before all this shit happened.” I nod. “Well, I would like to offer you a position in my home and family. As a healer.”

“What?”

“Help me and my men whenever we have injuries,” he says, folding his arms across his chest.

“I don’t have the training,” I reply.

“Training we can get you. Besides, I have a doctor. I just need someone on hand for the little things.” Rafe is serious. The man must be nuts.

“I don’t know…” I start but he cuts me off.

“In return, you will have a place to stay, where you can be safe. You’ll never want for a single thing and I will help you get your vengeance on the animals that did this to you.”

My gaze turns to Dom, hoping he can give me some clarity on his boss’s insanity.

“We could help you find your daughter.”

Chapter Five

Savage Inside

Dom

I stand in blood to my elbows that creeps up my arms no matter how far I roll my sleeves. Rafe and I promised Thalia vengeance, and she’ll have it … if perhaps not in the form my little nurse-to-be expects.

It took Rafe and I a solid month to search out the assholes who raped my girl. When had I started thinking of her that way? Probably the day I took her from that hellhole, and she wrapped herself around me on my bike. She seemed to like the ride, and I promised myself I’d take her out again when this was all over—just her and me, the wind and freedom brushing our skin, melding us together.

My body aches for the day I can kiss her, show her she isn’t alone in this world, despite that she’s strong enough to take it on, all on her lonesome and shatter it.

I’m not certain she understands the power she holds in her hands, over me, over the household. I’m not the only man who adores her but is wary of crossing her boundaries too early.

And so, we play a waiting game, with her as our prize.

Nor had I been able to fulfil the promise Rafe made to her that night about her daughter. Not only had Singleton disappeared from the world, I found zero evidence of manifests, a ship that went out that night, or a local flight. Nothing. As though the babies torn away simply dissipated into nothingness.

So, I filled the room I stood in with the tortured breaths of dying men as penance for my failure.

The thought of the slimy fuckers writhing beneath my boots taking children from their mothers rekindles my fury. I plunge the serrated hunting knife into the body directly beneath me, over and over, until it stops moving.

“Still haven’t found Singleton. He’s not here.” Rafe pauses in the doorway to the warehouse’s office we razed not fifteen minutes before and surveys the damage. “Having fun?”

“Loads.” His comment makes it through my bloodlust. “The fuck do you mean,Singleton’s not here? That was the whole fucking point!” I roar, throwing the knife that is never meant to be used apart from slicing-and-dicing in a firm grip.

We had a lead earlier in the day. Tommy found a CCTV stream with his graphics program that matched our man with facial recognition software. A tentative lead that brought us to the edge of the docks again, to a different warehouse with little rooms made up like princess palaces. Each door was chained shut, and when we broke in, we discovered each room was wiped clean of DNA and prints.

Our lead died, and now, so will his men.

My saving grace is that I’ll be able to give her the lives of those who ripped her innocence away as a replacement gift.

The blade I threw swishes sideways through the air and slices the bastard’s face open in a ragged cut from cheek to jaw. The pitiful sounds he makes don’t do it for me.

“I haven’t seen him. No one has. Are you ready to go?” Rafe crosses his arms, a heavy sigh leaving his chest.
