“Fine, I’m listening. But it better be good.”

“I’m so sorry about what happened with Mr Alpine and Mr Mortimer. That video was never meant to be?—”

“Save it,” I snap, holding up my hand to silence him. “I don’t want to talk about that day.”

“But I want to explain?—”

“And I don’t want to hear it. It’s in the past. I don’t even work here anymore, so forget about it and enjoy running the Mr Alpine account solo. No doubt it will lead to the promotion you’ve been after.” A small frown appears between his brows but I continue, “Where’s Mr Mortimer?”

“Mr Mortimer is… indisposed at the moment,” he replies carefully, his eyes avoiding mine.

This time, my eyebrows knit together in confusion. “Indisposed? What does that mean?”

“He’s not here,” Lycus clarifies, a touch of impatience creeping into his tone. “But that’s not important right now. What matters is why I’m here, in this office.”

I cross my arms, scepticism colouring my features.

“And why exactly are you here? And why should I care?”

Lycus takes a deep breath, as if bracing himself for my reaction. “Because I’m the owner of this company,” he admits, his gaze steady on mine. “I’ve been observing the operations for the past six months, evaluating its strengths and weaknesses.”

My jaw drops in disbelief. “You’re the owner?” I echo, feeling like the ground has been pulled out from under me.

Again.

He nods solemnly. “Yes. And now, I’m looking to restructure the management team. I want fresh perspectives, new ideas. And I want you to be a part of it.”

The words hang in the air between us, heavy with implications. A promotion, a chance to lead, to make a real difference. It’s everything I’ve been working towards, everything I’ve ever wanted.

But then reality crashes down on me like a ton of bricks.

“No,” I whisper, my voice barely audible. “I can’t.”

Lycus’s brow furrows in confusion. “Why not? This is a golden opportunity, Angelica. You’d be crazy to pass it up.”

Tears sting my eyes as I shake my head. “Because I don’t want people to think I got the job by sleeping with the boss,” I confess, the words tasting bitter on my tongue.

Lycus’s eyes widen in shock, his features softening with understanding.

“Angelica, that’s not?—”

But I cut him off with a wave of my hand, my resolve hardening as I jump to my feet. “I appreciate the offer, I really do. But I can’t accept it.”And you’re an idiot for thinking that I would!

With that, I turn on my heel and march towards the door, my heart heavy with regret. But before I can leave, I pause and turn back to face Lycus.

“And one more thing,” I say, my voice firm. “Stop cock-blocking my job applications, or I’ll take legal action against you.”

With that final warning hanging in the air, I push open the door and step out into the hallway, leaving Lycus behind with his offer and my shattered dreams.

Yet another betrayal to add to the long list of reasons why I need to move on and forget Lycus once and for all.

ChapterTwenty-Six

Lycus

Fuck, that is not how I saw my first interaction with Angelica going. As Angelica storms out of the office, her words pierce through the air like shards of glass, leaving me sitting there, frozen in place. The weight of her accusations hangs heavy, casting a shadow over everything.

I watch her retreating figure, the click of her heels against the polished floor a stark reminder of her departure. A part of me wants to go after her, to explain myself, to make her understand.
