He nods, jaw locked down tight. Swooping in, he gives me the type of kiss made popular in movies. I sway on my feet as I try to regain my bearings. He gives me a gorgeous grin, before putting me in my car. "Tomorrow, six o'clock? You know where I live right?"

I cackle. "Everyone does after that Fourth of July party you and Barrett thought wouldn't get out of hand."

He hangs his head, sighing heavily. "You start a fire with a couple of bottle rockets on a drunken holiday and you never live it down."

I press the start button on my car, listening to the engine fire. "I'll be there."

"See you then, Kara." He lifts his hand in a wave.

"See you then."

CHAPTER FIVE

Abel

"Remember," Barrett gives me a grin as I leave work the next day. "Rub one out before she comes over. That way you won't be so nervous."

"Shut the fuck up. You act like I've never been on a date in my life. I have had a relationship before, you know? Just not one I considered lasting the rest of my life."

He bends his eyebrows together, disbelief across his face. "Freshman year of college? C'mon, kiss my ass. You were with her because it was the first time you could have a girl in your room without this one knocking every five minutes." He hitches a thumb back at my dad.

"Not true," I argue. "She was the first, and only girl, I've ever said the "L" word to. She just had bigger dreams than Broken Falls."

"As evidenced by her Instagram feed," Dad interjects. "Did you see she's in Fiji?"

"Yes." Both Barrett and I answer. "Jealous as fuck," I shove my hands in my jeans pockets. "We're freezing ass and she's barely dressed."

"And you could've been there," Jasper points over. "If only you could've locked that down in college."

"What the fuck are you even doing here?" I screw my eyebrows together. "This is a construction site, no road crew needed."

"Came to pick him up," he nods toward Barrett. "We're heading into Morgantown tonight. We're gonna go watch some hot country singer do an acoustic set."

"Alexis and I are going with them. She won tickets off the radio, so if you have issues tonight and can't handle something, you're on your own," Dad purses his lips, sticking his hands on his hips.

"Y'all act like I'm not an adult. Like I can't figure out how to do things on my own when it comes to a woman I'm attracted to."

"Well," Jasper shoots me a grin. "She did have to make the first move, and then made you jealous. So, keep telling yourself whatever you want. You ready?" He tags Barrett on the chest.

"Y'all coming over to the house?" Dad asks as he starts packing his stuff up.

"Yeah, if you don't mind. You're a lot closer than us having to head back to the duplex."

I roll my eyes. They live in a duplex right beside one another. They're lucky they can take a shit without consulting the other. "Well, y'all have fun."

"We will," Jasper laughs. "You're so salty."

"I'm only salty because y'all decided to do this and didn’t consult me. Luckily I could ask Kara out, instead."

Barrett beats me on the chest. "That's what happens when you grow up and become an adult. Your friends take up less of your time and you care more about what women think of you. You're growing up." He wipes away a fake tear.

"I hate all y'all. I'm out."

As I leave, I have a grin on my face. No matter how much the group of us argue, I don't know where I'd be without them. They've literally saved my life.

My stomach is rolling as I see the lights of Kara's car pull into my driveway. I know it's hers because it sits so low to the ground. She's the only person I know who doesn't have a truck, SUV, or Jeep. I've never been this nervous before. My hands shake as she parks, and then gets out. She's carrying something that's covered. Maybe it's dinner in case mine sucks. Can't say I blame her for having a backup plan.
