“As for you, Olivia. I have two options. The first is you withdraw from the class this term. If I can pull some strings, you won’t be penalized. The second option depends on how Tomas answers this. Tomas, is your grade based on any coursework Olivia has completed to this point?”

“No, grades are only based on midterms and final competencies. Midterms haven’t been graded yet.”

“Perfect. So, Olivia, you could continue this class with the new professor.”

I chew on my lip pensively as I feel both sets of eyes on me. “What if I don’t like either of those options?”

Dad’s eyes flare. “Are you thinking about testing out?”

I shrug. “I don’t know. I was wondering about taking the semester off.”

Okay, now he’s obviously angry. Tomas and Dad both glare at me incredulously.

“What? I get it. It could put me behind, but, Dad, the man just got stabbed for me, for Christ’s sake.”

“Olivia, I don’t need you doting over me for the rest of the semester. You need to keep up with your coursework.”

“Why do you sound like him right now?” I gesture towards Dad.

“Olivia Elizabeth Hamilton, don’t you make a daddy joke right now.”

“Oh, Jesus Christ,” Tomas mutters.

“I need to wash my ears out with bleach,” I say under my breath.

“But seriously, Dad, the more I’m around on campus, the more people will talk. Don’t you want this as quiet as possible?”

Dad nods slowly. “You make a good point.”

“Write a letter and withdraw. If you write a letter saying you’re too upset over the events with Mr. Bryne, it’ll be fine. I have to run. Love you, kiddo. Tomas, remember what I told you in my office. I may be more accepting after talking to Olivia, but it stands. If you break her heart, Mr. Bryne will be the least of your problems.”

No sooner had Dad left, Dr. Jin enters as part of rounds.

“The wound is healing nicely, and you seem to be stable. I’ll have your paperwork in an hour. No driving until you’re off the painkillers. Quick showers are fine. No baths or submerging your sutures. No exercise, strenuous lifting, or any vigorous activities that could rip your sutures open.” He gives us both a pointed look.

I’m so fucking excited that I could jump and scream, but instead, I wait until Dr. Jin is gone, then give Tomas a chaste kiss.

“Ready to play house?” I smirk.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Tomas

Dr.Jinispunctualwith the discharge paperwork. The nurse delivers the paperwork, making me sign my life away on fifty various dotted lines. I don’t mind. I don’t even mind that the board suspended me. What’s done is done and I’ll accept whatever the outcome is. I gave in, and unlike the situation with Vanessa, I’m happy I did.

Olivia notices me watching her as she packs what little we have in the room and gives me a shy smile. I almost feel like I’m sleeping, like this is some dream too perfect to be my actual life.

The nurse brings in a wheelchair.

“Absolutely not.”

Olivia raises her brows. “I'm going to remember this later when we're playing doctor.”

I weigh the threat, ultimately deciding that she holds the key to whether or not I get laid. I sit and give a scornful look before she pushes me through the hallway.

“So, what happens now, doctor?”

“I need to pick up clothes and toiletries, then I’m taking you home.”
