Whoever it was seemed to be cocooned in a glowing white light, extending their arm, beckoning me forward.

“Reagan.”

Surprise. Fear. Confusion. They consumed me.

“Jo?” I asked, running toward him. “Jo?” I screamed his name, crossing the emptiness of space until I crashed into him, scooping him in my arms.

“Hello, Reagan,” he said softly, curling into me.

Tears streamed down my face, or at least I imagined they did.

“What are you doing here?” I asked.

“You’ll be back with him soon,” he answered.

“What do you mean?” I sat him down, kneeling before him while he stood, looking at me with his warm, brown eyes. A strange jolt rippled through me, but I couldn’t understand what was happening. I had no body, yet I knew without a doubt, what I felt was real.

I would cross the veil soon.

“We don’t have much time. His soul will save you.”

I shook my head. “It can’t. Clara and Caius can’t put it back in me. I’m dead, Jo.”

“No, they can’t,” he whispered. “But I can.”

It took a moment to process it. The How. But it all made sense. “Your magic. Everything we never understood about you. Your powers. This was it, wasn’t it?” He nodded, and I smiled, pulling him into a hug. “We’re going back?”

“You’ll be with him again,” he said weakly. I pulled away, holding his shoulders, looking him in the eyes.

“What are you not saying?”

“I won’t be with you anymore, Reagan.”

“No ...” I choked on a sob. “No, you have to be there, Jo. You have to.”

He smiled softly, cupping my cheek with his tiny hand. “This is what I’m meant to do.”

Another jolt rippled through me, and then I understood it for what it was. Fissures appeared on his skin, light peeking through the cracks. Looking down, I saw my chest beginning to glow.

“You’re going to die!”

“Yes.”

“No,” I screamed, trying to brush it away. “Don’t do this. Stop it!”

“Reagan.” He gasped. The voice he used to say my name was foreign. Changing it back, he spoke like the Jo I knew. “This is what I am meant to do. It’s my purpose.”

I shook my head fervidly, hiccupping as I cried. “I don’t know what that means.”

My arms began to glow, and the light was leaving my precious cousin.

“I chose this existence. For five thousand years I have accepted life in a mortal body, waiting. Waiting for you.” He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath before opening them again. “It was my atonement.”

“For what, Jo? I don’t understand.” My words were rushed and barely understandable through my sniffles.

“For banishing Caius. The weight of my actions was too much to bear. I owed him more than what I gave my friend on that day. He was my brother, and I failed him.”

“Who are you?” I whispered.
