I nodded, then stood up, motioning for the older woman to come to her son. She rushed to his side, pulling him into a protective embrace.

“What did you do to her?” Nog shouted and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. Jo was something special, but this one? Obnoxious was an understatement.

Ignoring him, I approached the large shifter. “You’re related. Who are you?”

“Her father,” he growled. I dipped my chin and lowered my eyes to Oberon to release him. Once free, the shifter’s body vibrated in fury, but he didn’t shy away from staring me down. We stood eye-to-eye, a rare feat unto itself. I glanced at Styx, signaling for her to release the woman she held.

“I imagine you have questions,” I said, returning my attention to the shifter.

“You could say that, starting with who the hell are you?”

“I’ll answer yours if you answer mine.”

“Hey! I have some questions too.”

“Gods’ sake, Nog. Shut up,” Clara grumbled, slapping him on the arm.

“You should listen to her,” I said, raising a brow.

The shifter looked me up and down. The crease in his forehead never disappeared, but he held out his hand to shake mine.

This day had taken me by surprise, and his gesture was no different. I accepted it, gripping firmly.

“I still have an overwhelming desire to kill you,” he said. “But you saved my daughter, and for that, I owe you thanks first.”

“Um, Tío? Apparently you were too ragey to hear the part where he casually mentioned that Reagan ishis mate," Nog said. “I think killing is warranted. Just saying. I’d be wanting to if she were my daughter—Ow! Clara, what the hell are you hitting me for?”

Alvaro’s eyes flashed with an animal I hadn’t seen in a very long time.

Something told me he’d heard it just fine.

Chapter7

Reagan

My body ached.

It was different than the times I’d woken up before. Instead of weakness and gnawing pain, my limbs were stiff, and my muscles were sore. My head felt like it was in a vice.

Soft cotton graced my skin. A clean shirt. It felt nice.

I licked my chapped lips and took a deep breath, inhaling the familiar scent of fresh laundry, but there was a new scent I’d never noticed before. The earthy aromas of sweat, roasted hazelnuts, and whiskey invaded my pores and overwhelmed my senses. The smell was divine, and I felt comfort in the way it enveloped me.

Eres’s curiosity reached me, and she peeked out. I’d never felt her so close to the surface before. It sent me into a panic, and my eyes shot open.

Memories of dying slammed into me. The ward failing. The Soulless One appearing. And there he was, staring back at me.

A torrent of emotions flooded my body.

I’d been curled up onhislap. My head had been resting onhischest. It washisscent that had been driving me crazy. Dear gods, why? I scrambled back in a clumsy crab walk across the floor until I hit the couch behind me, collapsing suddenly into a sitting position.

His dark gaze tracked my every move, taking in every inch I put between us. The sinful curve of his mouth turned down into a displeased scowl. My chest seized, alarm bells screaming in my mind.

The ward had broken.

The man in my dreams was real.

A shadow stepped in between us, blocking him from view. I recognized Sin’s faded, paint-splattered blue jeans. Instead of feeling secure in her strength, I was terrified for her.
