“Dead serious. Besides, I have an assignment for you. Both of you. I need to find a way to remove my soul from Reagan. Pol, I’d like you to cross the portal and search there. Start with her family and see what they know. Abyssian, you can search here in Tartarus.”

Pol’s mouth dropped open. “Why am I being sent earthside if he’s the one that wants to fuck the relative?”

“Because you scare people here and that tactic won’t work. Her family is angry. They aren’t going to fear you, trust me, but they will do anything for Reagan. If they have any leads or information, I have a feeling they’ll share it if you get to know them. For all Abyssian’s faults, he’s good at getting people to talk and would be better suited here.” My brother started to preen, but I shut him down. “Making a pass at her sister or aunt won’t win us any favors either, so he's staying, you go.”

Pol snorted, and Abyssian muttered under his breath, but I chose to ignore it.

“If we’re doing the legwork, what will you be doing, brother? Taking long walks on a volcanic beach with that pretty little mate of yours?—”

“Call her pretty again and I’ll cut out your tongue and feed it to you.”

Abyssian threw his head back, laughing with ease. “Touchy, touchy.”

“Possessive much?” Pol added.

I ran my fingers through my hair, looking out the window at the twin moons. “Something like that.”

Chapter13

Reagan

Blinding light filled the room, making me wince.

“What the . . .?” I slurred, wiping drool from the corner of my mouth with the back of my hand. After Caius left last night, I’d collapsed into bed on the plush, comfortable mattress.

A tall woman with broad shoulders and a thick blonde braid that fell to her waist stood by the windows. The curtains had been flung open, and all the fairy lights and lanterns had been lit. I sat up quickly. "Who are you?"

“Jana,” she said, giving a bland curtsy.

I hadn't heard that name yesterday, and I still had no idea what she was doing in my room. My confusion apparently came through loud and clear.

“Your chambermaid,” she supplied in a flat tone.

Uneasiness swirled in my chest as nausea churned. "Hi, Jana, I’m Reagan.”

“I know,” she replied sharply. "You were supposed to be at breakfast with His Majesty half an hour ago."

“Oh, I didn’t realize . . .” I scrubbed the sleep from my eyes. “He didn’t say anything. Guess he just expected me to read his mind.”

Jana pursed her lips. “Perhaps if you had been sharing a room with him, you might have stirred when he woke.” I wasn't going to touch that with a ten-foot pole, but her irritation with me was confusing.

She didn't seem to be some jealous ex, and for that I was grateful. The last thing I needed was some territorial woman mad at me for thinking I wanted to be the Queen of Monsters . Oh gods, was there a Queen of Monsters?

These were important questions I should have asked before this morning. He may think I’m his mate, but that didn’t mean there wasn't someone here before me. Ugliness unfurled in my chest, and I squashed that down with emotions that I wanted to pretend weren’t there, especially this early in the morning. Was it morning? I actually had no idea.

Jana sighed, clasping her hands. “I need to make your bed.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” I said, swinging my legs over the side. A light bulb went off in my head. “Look, I can make my bed. It’s okay. I know you’re supposed to do what he tells you to, but you don’t have to do his bidding here. You’re safe with me.”

Jana looked at me as though I had two heads. “I beg your pardon, miss?”

That little light bulb fizzled right out.

“Um, I meant ... you don’t have to be ...” My inability to choose better words didn’t help her understand me at all, and I let out a loud breath. “All I meant by it was you seemed put out that you had to take care of me. You have an entire castle. I’m sure when he made you add me to the list of responsibilities, it wasn’t wanted.”

Jana blinked several times, considering me. “We aren’t slaves here, miss. We work here, by choice. He doesn’tmakeus do anything.”

“He’s your ... employer? You want to be here?” That was unexpected, and I hadn’t considered the possibility.
