“Great.Something tells me that she's not going to suck as bad as we do.”

I didn’t mean to voice that at Eres, but she let out a grunt in anger.

“Because you won’t listen to me!”

“I’m listening! I’m listening! There! I let go.”

The time to argue was gone, and I had no plans on dying. Pulling back, I let Eres take over. She kicked her legs out, turning her body so we could stand, but just as she gained her footing,Jana lifted back on her hind legs to bring her heavy hooves down on us. Bones crunched on impact as she attacked viciously, repeatedly slamming her weight onto us.

“We have to move away from her!”

“I'm trying,” she said, her voice strained. She jumped up, losing balance and toppling to the side again, but she’d managed to pierce Jana deeply on the hind leg with her horn.

Jana’s elk let out a wail that shifted into a human scream, but I didn’t think the injury was enough to incapacitate her.

“Maybe you shouldn’t have taken over and let me handle it.”

“We’d be dead already if you handled it.” I wanted to scream in frustration, but a pained whimper escaped our mouth.

“What’s happening?”

“This body is broken,” she whispered. “Needs to heal . . .”

“Can’t death gods heal fast?” I asked her.

Eres didn’t respond and my anxiety increased tenfold. If she was doing bad enough that she couldn’t respond . . . “I’m trying to keep the worst of it from you. Ingrate.”

All at once the pressure eased off.

Blood was dripping into my eyes and making it hard to see past the red haze. Just as my vision began to darken, a door slammed into the hard brick wall, and an invisible string tugged hard in my chest.

He was here.

Chapter17

Caius

Buzzing swarmed my veins like a thousand bees. Adrenaline coursed through my system in a way I’d never felt before, which meant only one person had caused it.

Reagan.

Desperation clawed at my throat.

My fists pounded against the locked dreadoak door, sending thundering echoes down the corridor. Not a sound could be heard through it, almost as if someone had intentionally tried to silence our bond.

There was no time to waste. Summoning my shadows, I broke through whatever barrier separated us and thrust the door open with a force that buried the handle in the stone wall.

Horror filled me.

Lying in the center of a destroyed room was my mate. She’d shifted into a glorious dark unicorn, but she was bleeding out everywhere. Still, she kicked weakly, not giving up the fight.

I wanted to go to her, but her attacker was still conscious. Jana was up against the wall in her human form, mostly naked. Beside her were the shredded clothes of her uniform.

I didn’t know what happened here, but I would find out.

Shadows snaked out from my hands, pulling her off the ground and holding her up by her armpits. Then they wound around her like a python, more than willing to squeeze.

“Your M-maj?—”
