Unsure how to respond, I cleared my throat of the tightness. This felt like a goodbye, and while I wasn’t emotional about saying it to him, I still wasn’t a fan of goodbyes in general. “Take care of yourself, Ben.”

“You too, Reagan.”

Legion clapped him on the shoulder. “I’m going to take this one to the barracks and show him around. You know where to find me if you need me.”

Caius nodded, and then they were gone.

I wouldn’t admit it, but I breathed easier without having Ben and Caius in the same space, and it felt good to know he was going to get that asshole wolf under control. “You promise you won’t do anything to have him killed, right?” I whispered.

Caius' mouth curled in the corner. “Now why would I do that?”

“Say it.”

He lifted both hands in mock surrender. “Fine, I promise as long as he doesn’t set foot in the same room as you that I won’t do anything to have him killed.”

“Caius.”

“What? I’d say that’s more than fair.”

A slight smile played on my lips, and all I could do was shake my head. He did let Ben stay with Legion. That was progress. I suppose I was making progress too.

“Sorry to interrupt ... whatever just happened,” Pol started, seemingly annoyed. "What did you learn from Jana?”

All of my warm feelings dissipated. I’d momentarily forgotten about her. Caius sighed, and tension returned, but this wasn’t the sexy kind. I knew before he said anything that I wasn’t going to like it.

“Nothing. Jana killed herself.”

Shock ran through me.

I pressed my fingers to my lips. It’s not like there was love lost. At best, I would have just said she was rude to me, then she tried to kill me and that made her a bitch, but to kill herself . . . I shuddered.

“Damn,” Nog said. “I was hoping you’d let me at her.”

“For the love of the gods,” Clara muttered while I chastised him, saying his name in exasperation.

“I don’t know why either of you are surprised. In the short time I’ve been around him—he’s always like this. He truly is a little dog at heart,” Styx said.

“Hey,” Nog shouted. “I’ll show you little dog?—”

“I dare you. It’s been a while since I drowned someone. Please. Try me.”

My cousin’s steps faltered, and Clara marched over grabbing his arm sharply.

“Stop being a dumbass, dumbass.”

“Wow. You’resoclever,” he shot back.

They bickered between themselves, but I didn’t find it as funny as I usually would, not when Caius had just delivered such a crushing blow.

She was our only shot.

Taking your own life was an act of desperation no matter how you sliced it. When she killed herself, she took whatever truths she had with her, only leaving more questions behind. I couldn’t shake the quiet discomfort that wormed its way into my chest.

When she’d already been willing to kill me and suffer the consequences, what was she so afraid of that she would go to this length to keep quiet? What—or who—was she trying to escape?
