“What the?—”

She took one look at where she was and groaned.

“Don’t tell me I sleepwalkedagain,” she said, sitting up. I instantly missed the feeling of her pressed against me but kept it to myself as she shuffled up to her knees. “That’s the third time this week.”

“You didn’t sleepwalk,” I said slowly, pushing the papers together in a haphazard stack and setting them on the edge of my nightstand. I turned back, giving her my full attention. “You teleported.”

“What?” Her tone was filled with doubt and her eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. “That’s not possible I’m?—”

“Half witch,” I interrupted. “And a unicorn shifter. Both of which traditionally have magic outside of shifting into your animal.”

She went quiet, her gaze distant. I recognized the look as her speaking to Eres. A moment passed. She narrowed her gaze. Another minute went by, then she blinked, refocusing on me. “I don’t suppose you know how to excise Eres from me, do you?”

“Afraid not.” One side of my mouth quirked up. “What did she say?”

“Apparently thattraitorhas known I’ve been teleporting the whole time. It’s a power I had when I was younger, before my dad locked my magic away.”

I scratched my stubble. “Why when you’re sleeping? Was it that way before?”

“I—” she broke off. Eres must have said something else because her lips pressed together in a firm line. “I don’t think so. Eres said I used to do it at will. My powers are slowly coming back, and she thinks?—”

“She thinks?” I prompted when she didn’t continue.

Reagan sighed. “She thinks I’m subconsciously moving to where I want to be.” I couldn’t help smirking any more than she could help elbowing me. “Ow,” she complained. “Have I mentioned you’re hard?”

“Repeatedly.” My double entendre made her grin.

“Not that way. Get your head out of the gutter.”

I chuckled, grabbing her by the waist and dragging her onto my lap. Reagan slapped at my hands. She was being playful, not serious, or I would have let her go instantly.

“You’re insatiable,” she muttered.

“When it comes to you? Always.” Despite the fact I wanted to take it further, this wasn’t the time. I kept my hands on her waist, turning her sideways so I could look at her. “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be in my bed. You know that, right?”

A blush fell over her cheeks, adding a rosy tint to her bronze skin. “That’s not ... that’s not what’s bothering me.”

“Okay,” I said slowly. “What is it, then? Talk to me, Reagan.”

“It’s me. My past. I just, ugh.” She gripped her hair near the roots and squeezed. “I hate that I don’t remember. That the only way to remember is to go through my memories one by one and relive it. I hate that I had no choice, and that no one thought to educate me or even tell me about it as I got older. They let me all believe I was weak and now I have powers that I don’t know how to use, and I’m relying on my unicorn—who is just as much to blame—to tell me what the hell is going on.”

I sighed, rubbing her back with one hand while I held her to me with the other. “Hey, hey. It’s okay. We’ll figure this out. Together.”

“How?” she asked, water gleaming in her eyes. It pissed me off to see her on the verge of tears over this. I was lividforher. The lies she’d been told were painful, but the truth hurt significantly worse.

“We take it one day at a time. If you want to go through your memories, then I’ll be here to process with you. If you don’t and you’d rather learn your powers without accessing the past, then we practice. Teleporting is a power I possess. I can help you learn to control it—at least when you’re awake. Same for shifting.”

The tears spilled over, and she wiped them angrily, almost like she was pissed for crying at all. “You promise?”

I hated the hopeful tone in her voice, as if I’d ever lie to her. Instead of saying as much I lowered my forehead to hers and whispered, “I promise.”

We kissed softly and it wasn’t the typical explosion of passion that occurred between us. Instead, it was quiet. Gentle. I felt something blooming for the first time, and it caused a sudden fear to settle deep in my stomach.

I swallowed hard and pulled away.

“How would you like to switch out sparring with shifter training today?” I asked, keeping my tone light.

“Really?” The most beautiful smile blossomed on her face, stretching from cheek to cheek. “I would love that.”
