Andwhile writing synopses were one of his least favorite things on the planet,Adamhad to admit that he was enjoying the writing.Itfelt as though he were stretching long-unused muscles, the muscle memory of fingers moving across a keyboard making him feel more like himself than he had in a long time.Hedidn’t think he’d realized just how much he’d missed writing until he’d started again.

Heglanced over atHazel, who’d finished with the grated parmesan and was now staring intently at the screen of her laptop.Shepushed her hair over one shoulder, winding a lock of it around her finger, a gesture he already knew meant she was deep in thought.Truthbe told, he’d spent much of the day deep in thought, too.Notabout the book, but about if he was really ready to jump back into publishing again, if all of this worked out.Onthe one hand, this was a different situation with a different set of circumstances.Togo into it assuming the same outcome would likely create a self-fulfilling prophecy.Buton the other hand, if this went badly, he didn’t know if he’d ever write again.Andafter having just rediscovered that piece of himself, he wasn’t sure if he was willing to risk it.

“Right?” askedHazel, pulling him out of his thoughts.Asusual, he’d lost himself in them.

“I’msorry, what?” he asked, lowering the heat on the mushrooms and turning his full attention toHazel.

“We’regoing to end it on a cliffhanger, right?Shefigures out how to get back to her own time just as he’s captured?”

Henodded. “Ithink that’s the way we should end it, yes.”Thestory was moving and complicated, aboutMaryElizabethAxtonwho’d accidentally traveled back in time to aGossamerFallsstand-in town in 1864.She’sdesperate to figure out how to get back to her own time, but is also falling in love with the handsome soldier who saved her.Whilein the past,MaryElizabethdiscovers that she’s actually a witch with a tie to the soldier—he’s immortal, and has been searching for her because she’s the reincarnation of his love, and he’s the one who summoned her to the past. They’dborrowed that idea fromHazel’svampire story.Towardsthe end of the story,MaryElizabethhas the chance to return to her own time, where she feels she belongs.Shefeels she’s been tricked by the soldier, despite having fallen for him.

Therewas a chime fromHazel’sphone and she picked it up. “Shit,” she sighed, setting it back down. “Wehave more work to do.”

“What?” he asked, plating their pork chops, spooning the sauteed mushrooms over top, and then adding a generous helping of salad to each of their plates.Theysettled in at the table.

“ThatwasAlex.Hewants a sample of a sex scene so he can see ‘how spicy we’re talking here’,” she said, making air quotes around the word and imitating her agent’s staccato style of speaking.

“Sowe need to write a sex scene tonight, too?” he asked, sipping his wine, his mind already flipping through all of the dirty possibilities. “Howsteamy doyouwant the book to be?”

Sheshrugged. “Idon’t shy away from including sex in my books, soIthink readers will be expecting it.”

“True,” he agreed. “Okay, so when in the book do they first fuck?”

Hedidn’t miss the way her eyes widened a little, and she set her fork down. “Thewedding night.Afterhe has to marry her to keep her safe from the other soldiers.”

“Notuntil then?” he asked, his eyebrows raising.Thewedding was going to take place about fifty percent of the way through the book.

Shechewed thoughtfully on her pork chop. “Idon’t think she’d give in until then. She’sstubborn and headstrong and not wanting to admit that she wants him as much as she does because of how complicated it all is.”

“Okay, so the wedding night,” he said, nodding his head in agreement. “Isshe nervous?Excited?”

“Alittle of both,Ithink.Hetakes charge.”

“Soit’s from his perspective, then?Wecan see how much he loves her, how much he wants this, what it means to him, whichIthink we need.”

“Iagree, yeah.”

Theyate in thoughtful silence for a moment, the tension between them growing, pulsing like a heartbeat.

Witha soft growl,Adamset his fork down, grabbedHazel’shand, and pulled her to her feet. “I’mnot going to be able to eat until we figure out this scene,” he said, savoring the little squeak she made as her body came flush against his.

“Okay,” she said, a little breathlessly, andAdamgrinned, especially because he could tell she didn’t know exactly what he had in mind.

Shelet out a surprised squeal when he tossed her over his shoulder and started toward the stairs, carrying her like a caveman up to his bedroom.Hetossed her down on his bed, his heart constricting at the sight of her, hair a little mussed, eyes bright, chest heaving.

“Spreadyour legs,” he said and she did, easing back on the bed and spreading her legs for him.Shewas wearing jeans, so there was nothing to see, but the fact that she’d obeyed his dirty command turned him on.

“Samuelstared down at his bride,” he narrated. “Nervousanticipation filled the room, making them both feel a little drunk.Foronce, he couldn’t quite read her emotions, leaving him feeling confused.Butthat confusion did nothing to abate the throbbing urgency in his stiff cock.”

Hazel’smouth opened and her eyes grew heavy lidded as he narrated.Adamgrinned, stepping closer, taking inspiration from the woman in front of him.

“MaryElizabeth’smouth parted, drawing his attention to her full lips, swollen from the kisses he’d stolen earlier.Samuelgrinned darkly, his mind racing with exactly what he wanted to do with that mouth.”

Hazelhummed in approval, and he moved onto the bed, his knees on either side of her hips.

“Heeased her down to the bed, following her with practiced grace.Shewasn’t the first woman he’d had in this bed.Butgoddammit, she would be the last.”

“Don’tstop,” she whispered, fisting her hands into his shirt.
