“Who let you in there?”

“It doesn’t matter. Just be serious with me.”

“I’m being serious. I’ve only ever done paperwork in there. But yes, it is what you were thinking. Sort of. I just thought it was a cool idea, and then when the guys saw it, well…”

“You haven’t used it with anyone?”

“No.”

“But you’re going to?”

“Sure. Someday. Why not?” I raise my shoulder half-heartedly because this conversation is headed down a strange path.

“Is that what you’re into?” She shrugs out of her coat, and we put them away in the closet along with our shoes.

“Why are you so curious about my sex life suddenly?”

“I don’t know. The girls seemed to know so much about your sex life, and we’ve never talked about it. And then that felt weird. We’ve been friends forever and that’s never come up once. That’s odd, right? We talk about everything else,” she explains while we walk into the kitchen. I’m about to pour her a massive glass of water because drunk Aurora has way too many questions.

“I guess so.”

“I mean I talk about it with all my girlfriends, and we’ve been friends a lot longer than some of them. I assume you talk about your sex life with your other friends otherwise, how would they know so much?”

“I mean… Tobias also used to have really over-the-top parties.”

“Sex parties?”

“No. But… Just…” I sigh. “Isn’t this weird?” I ask, pulling the glasses out of the cabinet and pouring us both a glass of water.

“Is it?” She gives me an innocent look as she takes the glass, and I give her an unamused look in return.

“How’s sex with David?”

“Sucks to be honest.” She takes a sip of her water and then her lashes slowly lift. “It’s not the main reason, obviously. But it’s one of many things that just doesn’t seem to work between us.”

“Sucks how?” I shouldn’t ask. But I can’t help my curiosity.

“He’s just… I don’t know. He likes sex on a certain routine that doesn’t interfere with his work. On a certain schedule, only one or two positions. Nothing spontaneous. And like, even his kissing feels… I don’t know. Perfunctory. Like he’s doing it because he knows he should because just telling me to drop my panties and bend over would be rude. But honestly, I might prefer it to the kissing that feels like a chore. Like he’s checking off a list.”

“Holy shit!”

“What?”

“I take back what I said about us getting you to the altar next weekend. Never mind all of that. That sounds like a lifetime of hell.”

She laughs and gives me the sort of smile that makes my heart pound a little harder on the next beat.

“I mean… he’s stressed at work and has a lot on his plate. He likes things a certain way, and when you’ve been with someone a while…”

“When you’ve been with someone a while you should know what they like. Know their body almost as well as your own. Be open to trying new things if that’s what they need sometimes. Especially if it’s just learning to kiss a little better. Fuck, that’s like baseline in hell kind of stuff.”

She shakes her head, still laughing as she swallows another sip of the water. I can’t believe this guy had her—with her sweet laugh, that gorgeous smile, her sense of humor, and that body and just went through the motions. It’s a fucking waste. I’m not saying I’m the right guy but he certainly isn’t.

“You can definitely do better than that.”

“I don’t think you’ve seen the dating pool. It gets shallower every year. You can’t ask for too much.”

“Someone who listens to your needs when it comes to basic intimacy isn’t too much.” I frown.
