The fact that he’s said this in a lowered voice with his chin dipped makes me stumble over my words. “I-I’m not… I didn’t… mean…”

He also takes a step toward me, snow crunching under his boots. “Because I don’t think that would be very professional, do you?”

I take a step back. “I just… I meant…”

He takes another step and dips his chin even further, nailing me with his gaze. “But then again, this is your day off.”

I retreat another step and my hips collide with the hood of his car, sending a sudden jolt of chill through my system. Which makes my voice tremble. Or at least that’s the explanation I’m going for right now as to why I sound so breathless.

“I didn’t mean… that,” I say, trying to look anywhere else but at his face. “I just meant that you’re not wearing a scarf or gloves and… You don’t have a hat on.”

He doesn’t.

And seriously I don’t know how he’s able to bear the cold right now.

But then again, maybe he doesn’t need all that protection against the snow because he burns so hot.

He has to.

Even though we’ve been standing in this harsh weather for the past twenty minutes or so, his skin still looks just as tanned as always. And he’s standing just as tall as ever instead of hunched against the winds.

Oh, and the fact that as soon as he got closer to me, I’ve started to get warmed up.

“Mm.”

That low, noncommittal sound of his vibrates somewhere deep in my belly and I’m compelled to look up. “B-because it’s cold.”

He takes in my face that I’m sure is all flushed and fuming with embarrassment. “It is.”

His perusal is making me lose my train of thought. “I…”

“So you’re going with me,” he says, the same thing he did back at the restaurant.

“To the c-cabin?”

“Yes.”

And maybe it’s because we’ve gotten way off track or maybe it’s his nearness, the heat he’s brought with him, the way his eyes seem to be glowing as he stares down at me, I don’t know. Whatever it is, it loosens up something inside of me and I say, “But I don’t want to go with you.”

“Why not?”

“Because,” I swallow, “you’re mean.”

His eyes glow even more. “I am, huh?”

“Yes, and I didn’t know that.”

“And if you had?”

“Then I would’ve done everything to…”

“To what?”

Fall out of love with you.

“To quit,” I say instead.

I would have, yes.
