Maybe that’s why my siblings and I have three different fathers.

Anyway.

Bottom line: I don’t think this Evan guy is for me.

“Mom,” I begin, trying to let her down gently. “I love that he’s your friend’s son and I love that you have someone to watchThe Bachelorwith. Because that show is crazy and even Amy and Cy won’t go anywhere near that crap, and we all know how much they both love reality TV. But that still doesn’t mean that I have to go to this… thing. Plus there’s a weather advisory tonight, remember? It’s going to snow. Pretty badly.”

In fact it’s starting already. Little snowflakes have already started to come down and it’s only going to get worse with gusty winds and temperatures dropping below freezing.

“This thing is called a date, by the way,” Jupiter supplies. “And it’s just a little snow.”

“It’s not just a little snow and why are you still on?” I ask her.

“Because I love your mother.”

“And I love you back,” my mom says. Then, “Now, Meadow, you’re nineteen. Almost twenty actually.”

She says it like this is the nineteenth century and I’m one of those spinsters who have zero hopes of ever landing a man due to their advanced age.

“So?”

“So it’s time you went on a date.”

“I’ve been on dates.”

“Okay. Name one time.”

“I went to…” I squint my eyes into the snowy night for a few seconds. “That carnival!”

“That carnival,” my mom says in a flat voice.

I nod triumphantly. “Yes. With that boy from that class.”

“With what boy from what class?”

Before I can answer, Jupiter speaks. “Oh, I remember that! He was from her math class. Anders or something.”

I snap my fingers. “Yes, thank you. I’d forgotten his name. Anyway, I went to the carnival with Anders from math class, Mom. So rest easy, okay? I’ve dated.”

“Actually,” Jupiter begins, “you didn’t go with him. You happened tofindhim there.”

Damn it.

This close.

I wasthis closeto getting away with it.

Besides, what’s the difference between going with him and finding him there when we both ended up having a great time?

Well, okay maybe not a great time; he did throw up on me a little because of that twisty ride we took. Because it upset his stomach and made him really scared. But overall it was still good.

And besides, who has the time to date when you’re always busy, busy, busy? With classes, with projects and homework, both yours and your siblings, and your job.

“I hate you so much right now,” I say with clenched teeth.

Jupiter simply chuckles.

“Meadow.” Again my mom puts on her ‘mom’ voice. “What have I told you about that word?”
