“I’ll bebeyondoffended.” He grabbed my hand and looked into my eyes. “These last months have been miserable as hell without you, and I was wrong about not needing you.”

“Damien—”

“This is my closing argument that I’ve been working on for weeks.” He kissed my forehead. “You don’t get to have any objections during this part, remember?”

I nodded, waiting for him to continue.

“I always thought I was a damn good lawyer, someone who worked better alone, but you made me an even better one,” he said. “I can’t promise that I’ll never defend someone you hate, or turn down someone you may not like, but I can promise you that I’ll never hurt you again.”

Tears pricked my eyes.

“I miss you,” he said, his voice hoarse. “Not only at work but in my life. I haven’t slept well since you said goodbye.”

“You’ve never slept well, Damien.”

“It was a lot better when we were together.” He wiped away a stream of my tears with his fingertips. “I need you, Elizabeth, and I love you.”

“I think you left out a few words,” I said. “I think you meant to say that you love fucking me.”

“That goes without saying,” he said softly, “But I wasn’t leaving anything out at all. I love you, and as much as I hate this term, I would like to be your boyfriend.”

“But not your partner?”

“I have a brand-new partner now.”

“Is she any good?”

“She’s beyond terrible and I’m firing her today.” He pulled me into his arms. “I need you to take me back.”

“I was back when you said you needed me…” My sentence ended on his lips, and he kissed me softly before pulling away. “Something wrong?”

“Not at all,” he said, looking at his watch. “We have a few briefs to go over tomorrow, if you’re up to it, but I need to take you to the firm’s mock courtroom for the rest of the night.”

“For what?”

“Because you clearly haven’t learned how closing arguments work, since you kept interrupting me.” He smiled. “I need to give you a few new lessons in the jury box…”

The End
