I can host.

Is everything okay?

He didn’t text me back.

“We’ll need to order takeout on a schedule,” I said, escorting the team of ten into my place. “I vote for Chinese on Saturday for lunch, but you guys can pick whatever you want all the other days.”

“Do you have anything we can cook here tonight?” Amanda asked.

“Nothing edible, but feel free to check my fridge and see for yourself.” I plugged in my laptop, waiting for her to return with her takeout requests.

“It must be nice to think wine and filet mignon aren’tworthyof eating,” she said, placing a silver platter in front of me. “You’ve got a stack of those that we can definitely eat,” she said.

“She’s also got everything we need for pasta and plenty of other stuff!” Rob called out.

Confused, I entered my kitchen and rummaged through the fully stocked refrigerator. My pantries were full of gourmet foods I didn’t buy, and the standing fridge and wine cooler looked like they belonged in a five-star chef’s place, not mine.

Want me to go grocery shopping for you?

Damien’s words suddenly played in my mind.

“I guess I underestimated how much I had in here,” I said. “You can make whatever you like.”

My phone soundedat two o’clock in the morning.

Elliot jumped over me and sat on it, annoyed at its loud vibrations.

It continued ringing, though, despite its fur muffler.

Sighing, I rolled over and pulled it from under him, spotting Damien’s name.

“Hey,” I answered.

“Hey. Were you sleeping?”

“Yeah.”

“I see,” he said. “Go back to bed.”

“I’m not that tired.” I hit my lamp light. “Is something wrong?”

“I just finished doing some work at a bar on Wall Street,” he said. “And now I need a ride home.”

“What?”

“I’ve been up twenty hours straight and my partner made me promise to stop driving on those occasions,” he said.

“Your partner has also told you about this wonderful company called Uber.”

“Do I seem like the type of man who would ever use them?”

I smiled. “What about Mr. Hamilton?”

“He’s my last resort.”

I laughed. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

“Stay on the phone with me.”
