“What?”

“You heard me. You know, a sexy, rich older man. What about Sam?”

“Sam Goodfield? I don’t think so. Besides, he’s sweet on you, and you’re one to talk. You need a hot, rich cowboy, one that won’t allow anyone to hurt the two women in his life. That includes Britta.”

We both laughed and my thoughts drifted to Mr. City Slicker.

“What is that dreamy look on your face for?”

I shook my head but could feel the heat rising, a hot flash suddenly sweeping through me.

“Girl. You are blushing. Spill it. What did you do?” Megan teased.

“Who said I did anything?”

“Because I know you too well. It’s me you’re talking to. Remember?”

Biting my lower lip, I leaned forward. “What if I told you I met my match in one sexy, gorgeous, and very passionate man? Someone you could enjoy kissing in front of a fire for hours on end, his touch searing your skin, and the way he looked at you was as if you were the most beautiful woman on the planet?”

She pulled back slightly, giving me a salacious look. “Then I’d asked if the man had a brother.”

We both laughed and I couldn’t seem to get my mind out of the gutter. The very last thing I needed to be doing was thinking about hot sex when I was about to lose everything that mattered to me, but at least the imagery allowed me a moment to get away from the nightmare.

“Seriously,” she continued. “Did something happen? Did you meet someone?”

“In a wacked kind of way.”

“Spill it or else.”

“Did you hear about the Good Samaritan who prevented a robbery at the local gas station?” I lifted my eyebrows, watching as she realized what I was saying.

“Wait a minute. Didn’t that happen at the place where you work?”

“It did. On my shift.”

“Oh, my God. Why didn’t you call me?”

“It all happened so fast and this guy was there and ended up tackling the gunman to the floor, tying him up and waiting until the deputies got there.” I laughed as I thought about how reckless I’d acted, including grabbing the shotgun.

“You could have been killed! You’re not the Lone Ranger.”

Sometimes it felt like it.

“Mr. City Slicker came to the rescue.”

Megan laughed. “Color me intrigued. Tell me more.”

I glanced out the window, almost falling into a dreamy state. “He was unexpected, a tourist in a slick suit but that didn’t stop him from jumping in. I was incensed at first, but he did impress me.”

“Wow. Why do I have the feeling the story doesn’t end there?”

Being coy wasn’t my style but I couldn’t help myself, swirling my lemonade before answering. “Well, let’s just say he appeared in Wild Horse Saloon a few hours after we had words.”

“Had words, huh? Your hatred of men. So what happened?”

I certainly wasn’t going to tell her all the wretched details about the man spanking me but… “Let’s just say I let my guard down.”

“You did not!”
