It was all I could do not to choke. “I’m just her new friend. Nothing more.”

“I don’t believe you.”

The kid was going to be a little heartbreaker. That was evident. “So, who’s the big bear on your bed?” I had to change the subject, or I’d burst into laughter.

“Mr. Bear. What else?”

“Of course.”

“And who’s that? Mr. Kangaroo?”

She giggled and moved toward the box of toys, a giraffe’s head sticking out. “No, silly. He’s a giraffe. Why would he be called Mr. Kangaroo?”

“Oh, you’re right.”

I moved further into the room, finally sitting on the edge of her bed as the little girl continued to describe her toys. Every one of them had names. I’d never really thought I’d miss something I’d never wanted in the first place, but being around Britta allowed me a taste of something that I had no real understanding of.

And something I found myself more and more interested in.

A few minutes later I felt a presence, the crackle of current unmistakable. I lifted my head, drinking in the beauty standing in the doorway. At least now she had a sly grin on her face instead of a scowl. In her hands were two rocks glasses, the amber liquid looking remarkably familiar.

“I was almost out of wine. I found a bottle of whiskey,” Jessie said in a hushed tone.

“Sounds perfect.”

She took her time walking into the room, her eyes never leaving me. I was thrown by the difference in her personality. Maybe she no longer hated me for who I was and what I was doing on the ranch.

As she handed me the glass, our fingers touched and this time she didn’t flinch, instead dragging her tongue across her bottom lip. It was perhaps one of the sexiest moves I’d seen a woman make.

Britta stopped short, studying the two of us intently as Jessie sat down beside me.

“See, I was right,” Britta said.

“What were you right about, honey?” Jessie asked absently, tossing me a sly look out of the corner of her eye.

It wasn’t a good thing that my cock was pressing hard against my jeans, but I seemingly had no control around the feisty woman.

“He is your boyfriend, Mama. I knew it.”

I chuckled while Jessie coughed, not bothering to try to say anything to deny it. I couldn’t take my eyes off her as I brought the glass to my lips, feeling more relaxed than I had before. There was something special about being allowed into her world, so much so I found the tension I’d felt earlier starting to ease.

When she shifted on the bed, her leg touched mine and she sucked in her breath, slowly lifting her head to gaze into my eyes. There was so much depth to hers, as if I was able to see straight into her beautiful soul.

I pressed my leg more tightly against hers, my balls tight as drums from the simple action.

Jessie brought the glass to her lips, hiding behind it for a few seconds before taking a sip.

Goddamn, the woman was beautiful, driving me to the point of madness from desire.

“Mama. Can we ask him to stay for dinner?”

The question came so out of the blue we both chuckled.

“I’m certain Bastian has better things to do,” Jessie said, shortening my name then giving me a rebellious look.

“If you call poring over financials something better then you have a lot to learn, lady.”

“Does that mean you’d like to stay?”
