For all I knew the woman hated me. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did.

I rolled over in bed, taking the time to stretch out under the covers. There was still a hell of a lot to do, but I’d come to a conclusion, or maybe a realization while being unable to sleep. I didn’t want to sell the ranch. There were a lot of reasons, a solid one being someone else obviously wanted it badly enough they’d been willing to try to force my hand.

Yet there was also the obvious, the single reason that would haunt me until I made a more formal decision.

I wanted to spend more time with Jessie. I wasn’t a fool. I knew my reasoning wasn’t business savvy or smart on any level. I had no clue how to be around a kid. All I knew for certain was that I wanted to be with the amazing woman who’d endured so much.

As I glanced over at the clock, I rubbed my eyes. I needed coffee. After that, I planned on finding out everything I could about James. At least she’d provided his last name. There was no doubt the man was trouble. Whatever his intentions were with regard to his own child, one he’d never even met before, they weren’t good. That was apparent.

I threw back the covers, climbing out of bed, grabbing the same jeans I’d been in the night before. As I struggled into them, I listened for any sounds. There were none that I could hear, not that it meant anything. Just as I grabbed the jeans from the floor, I noticed the light under the door to the bathroom. She hadn’t left.

With no other noise coming from anywhere in the house, that meant Britta was still asleep. Unable to control my urges, I twisted the knob, surprised she hadn’t locked me out. She was already in the shower. The sight of her naked body behind frosted glass had a tremendous effect on me, my cock standing at full attention.

She was humming softly to herself. Perhaps the momentarily sadness had passed. I moved closer, taking a deep breath before opening the door. When she spun around, her initial look was one of terror until she realized it was only me, hungry to take her once again.

“Why, good morning, sleepy city slicker. I thought you were going to sleep the day away.”

I closed the door behind me, advancing like a predator. “You weren’t allowed to leave the bed.” As I backed her against the tile wall, she gave me a heated look. “That makes you a very bad girl.”

“Who, me?” Her tone was coy, playful as hell and as she purred in a loud tone, sliding her arms over my shoulders, I shook my head in appreciation.

“You need to learn that you will obey me.”

“What if I don’t?”

“You’re daring to ask me that?” I pulled her away from the wall, swatting her bottom four times.

Her laugh was perhaps the best sound I could hear in the morning, the lilt sweet, incredible music.

“You act like such a tough man but you’re really a softie instead, all gooey inside.”

“Lady. It would seem you don’t know me very well.”

“I know enough to realize what you need.”

As I crushed my chest against hers, she licked her lips, tangling her fingers in my hair. I had a sense she was trying to garner control, which would never happen. “And what’s that?”

“A woman to keep you in line.”

“Is that so?”

“Way so.” She nipped my lower lip, which only made me growl. She had no idea what she was turning me into. A pure beast who seemed to have issues with keeping his control around her.

“I think you misunderstood the situation, my little lioness. You will never be in charge.”

“Bet me.” A sly look remaining on her face, she brushed the tip of her index finger down the side of my neck, taking very deep breaths. “So I was thinking.”

“You were, huh? That could be a very dangerous thing for me.”

She jerked up her head, laughing when she realized I was joking. “You’re right. Don’t ever underestimate me. I could destroy you just as soon as fuck you.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.” I lowered my head, blowing from her jaw to her earlobe, driving my tongue into the shell of her ear.

“You’re such a bad man,” she cooed, her breathing ragged. “I was thinking you should stay. You know, for the fresh air. It might do a city slicker some good.”

I took my time nipping on her earlobe, dragging my tongue down her cheek slowly to her mouth, circling her soft lips before answering. “Is that what you think?”

“Uh-huh.”
