“Well, hello to you too.” I wasn’t in the mood to be grilled after the stressful day I’d had, mostly from worry that I’d look over my shoulder to see James standing a few feet away, tormenting me just because he knew he could get away with it.

“Get in. We need to talk. And hello. How was your day?” Megan gave me a snarky smile.

I’d purposely worked a few hours longer to try to get my wits together, calling my attorney after I’d calmed down. Thankfully, with the lovely weather, the gas station had been busy, taking my mind off the nightmare. “Where’s Britta?” I asked, a trickle of fear rushing through me. I eased onto the seat, my heart racing. “You didn’t leave her alone, did you?”

“Calm down. Do you honestly think I’d let her be alone? She’s with my mother, goofball. Relax. Now, what is going on? You refused to say anything when I drove you here. After the argument you had with Mr. Cawthorne, I thought you’d want to talk. I figured the reason you remained clammed up was because Britta was in the car, which is one reason I asked my mother to take care of her. Do you want to go back to her house or to yours? She’s fine to stay there, even all night. Ashley is there as well. You know my mother loves having both of them.”

I thought about her question, closing my eyes. “I don’t want to impose.”

“You’re not imposing.”

“Okay. Then allow her to stay for the night. I need some time to think and plan.”

“Good. We’re going to talk.”

Megan headed out of the parking lot and I still found it difficult to say anything to her. What was I supposed to say at this point? That I was an idiot? “James stopped by last night at the cabin and tried to take Britta. Sebastian was there. He made James leave, but it almost got really violent. After that, Sebastian wouldn’t let me stay there. So we spent the night at the main house.”

“Together.”

“Yes.”

“As in together, together?” she asked, giving me a sly look.

I pressed my head into my hand, placing my elbow next to the window. “Yeah, that too.” I wanted to tell her he’d been amazing, the passion we’d shared unlike anything I’d ever experienced, but I knew that would bring about a tongue lashing for caring about him when I continued to act like I didn’t.

“No wonder he said he cared about you.”

“He said that to you?” Why were there suddenly butterflies in my stomach from hearing that? It was silly. The man didn’t really care about me.

“Yeah, to me. Your best girlfriend. I could tell he was serious.”

“Too fucking bad. He’s not good for me.”

“Says who? Maybe he can help with getting James out of your life. He is worth like billions of dollars, you know.”

I turned my head toward her. “I had no idea he was worth that much.”

“Yeah, I know but I think what I found is just the tip of his family’s wealth and powerful regime. I know you’ve told me time and time again that you don’t give a shit about money, but billions could do a lot and he’s easy on the eyes too.” She grinned. “He’s the perfect catch.”

“Looks can be deceiving.”

“Oh, come on,” she snarked. “He is obviously infatuated with you. What is wrong?”

“I don’t know. It’s too perfect maybe. It’s just… He thinks I had something to do with railroading his grandfather.”

“I doubt that, girl. I saw the way he looked at you. As if you were the light in his entire life. I wish I had a man look at me that way. You should consider yourself very lucky.”

“I don’t even know anything about him. What did you find out?”

“He’s from Miami, he and his father running a huge commercial real estate development firm.”

“Miami? That’s where James is from.” The Florida area code made sense. I wasn’t stunned, just cautious.

“Yeah, so what?”

“So what if he’s working with James?” I had to think about the possibility, or I’d be a bigger fool.

She wrinkled her brow. “I don’t think so. In fact, from what I read, I don’t think there’s any love lost there.”
