“Because I’m going to see… him. I’m going to hand him the keys to the new truck and demand he gets rid of all this… crap.”

“Crap?” She took long strides closer to me, half laughing. “Are you kidding me? This… crap cost a small fortune.”

“That’s the point. It’s ridiculous if he thinks he’s going to get me to fall for him by plying me with expensive gifts.”

A sly grin crossed her face. “Honey. I think he’s already done that, and it had nothing to do with buying you gifts. Stop fooling yourself.”

I stuck out my hand. “Your keys, please. I know what’s best for me.”

“Uh-huh. I can certainly tell you don’t. If you want to send everything back, then you’ll need to take the brand-new horrible truck to his place. You’re not getting my keys.”

“You’re a terrible friend.”

“Tell me that again in about three days.”

I took a deep breath, ready to spout off all kinds of nasty things. But I couldn’t. “Fine. I’ll take the new truck where I will leave it.”

“Then you’re walking back the four miles or so?”

“If I need to. Yes.” I snatched the keys from the table, huffing as I stormed toward the door, her laughter trailing behind me.

“Tell him hello for me and that I love his taste in, well, everything. Oh, and what he did was very romantic.”

“In whose book?”

“I would say in pretty much every woman’s world. Oh, except for you, Miss High and Mighty.”

“I’m not high and mighty.”

“Uh-huh. Tell me another lie like you’re telling yourself. Maybe at some point you’ll believe them.”

I swung out my arm, holding up my middle finger before throwing open the door, stomping toward the new truck.

“Take the card. You need to read it.” Megan was right behind me.

“You read it. I’m not doing everything for you.” She was suddenly in front of me, pushing the card in my face.

“Take it or else.”

After snatching it from her, a part of me wanted to crush it into a ball, tossing it aside, but I couldn’t. What could he possibly have to say to me? “What does it matter what he has to say?” I was losing the battle with myself, wanting to read what he’d written.

“Because you need to know what he’s thinking.” Megan backed away. “While you’re attempting to fuck up your life, I’ll be hanging out enjoying your new things. You know, the great stuff the man who loves you gifted you for no other reason than because he wanted to bring a smile to your face. Yeah, that guy.”

It was impossible not to smile around my bestie. She’d always had a way of making certain I was called out on any bad behavior.

“Tell me one more thing and I’ll leave you alone. Do you care about him?”

While I didn’t want to answer, I knew she wouldn’t allow me to get away with remaining silent. “Yes, but?—”

“No buts,” she interrupted. “Only you know the answers you need. Just do me a favor. Stop lying to yourself.”

I was so unused to new things that it took me a few seconds to figure out the stupid key fob. But as soon as I opened the door, the new truck smell hit me like a wave of the finest fragrance I’d ever taken a whiff of in my life.

Growling all over again, I climbed inside, remaining still for a full minute before starting the engine. Oh, dear God. It purred like a… lion. As I studied the interior, before I knew it, I was tapping my feet on the floor mat, even rubbing my hand across the dashboard. The truck was so beautiful.

And forbidden.

I reminded myself of that more than once just to keep myself in check. I pulled out, also trying to keep my determination. The man simply couldn’t be allowed to buy me. As I drove, my thoughts continued to drift to the powerful man with the sexy smile and intense gaze. It was crazy how I felt about him. I didn’t know him. We hadn’t been on a date up to this point. We didn’t know each other, and he thought he could change my house without me giving him permission? The guy was nuts.
