“I dunno. You need to open it.”

“You’re a very bad man.”

“So you keep telling me.”

“And I will do so until the day you die.” I tore open the flap, reaching inside.

He pressed his hand against his heart, huffing. “Ouch. That hurt.”

“Wise guy.” I pulled out the folded papers, hating the fact my hands were shaking. It took me a couple of minutes to realize what I was reading. But when I finally managed to comprehend it, I lifted my head. “You did this.”

“Did what?”

“He dropped the custody battle. In fact, he’s giving up his parental rights. How?”

He shook his head, shrugging as I had before.

I raced toward him, jumping into his arms. “You are… amazing.”

“What? I didn’t do anything.”

I pressed kisses against his cheek. “Right. I know better.”

“Maybe I had something to do with it. You dropped something, Big Red.”

As I glanced over my shoulder, I noticed another piece of paper on the floor. I was in shock, uncertain how to feel. Tears rushed to my eyes and even though I tried to will them away, I couldn’t. “I can’t believe what you did.” When I looked up at him, his features sagged.

“Don’t cry, my feisty girl. You really do deserve happiness.”

“Thank you.”

“Go on. See what that is. Then we’ll talk about your ideas for the wedding venue.”

“You’re up to something. I can feel it.” The kind of look he gave me could quite possibly burn down a house. I crouched down, keeping him in my eyesight. “Don’t move or I might need to pull out my Louisville Slugger.”

“Then you’ll definitely be getting a spanking.” His grin set me on fire.

As I snatched the piece of paper from the floor, flipping it over, I blinked several times. “What is this?”

“What does it look like, beautiful lady?”

“Like a whole lot of money. Like millions of dollars. This has to be a joke.”

He shook his head. “It’s no joke, baby. I simply encouraged James to do the right thing and pay his back child support.”

“I don’t understand.” I could barely stand, my legs were shaking so badly.

“Well, it would seem that James happens to be the son of an old family enemy who’s about to take over the helm of a billion-dollar empire. He could afford to do the right thing. Besides, if he didn’t, I was going to expose the second family with a child born to an underage girl.”

“You’re kidding me.”

“Would I kid about a thing like that?” He walked closer, inhaling deeply. Even the way his nostrils flared was sexy as hell.

“You threatened him.”

“I did.”

“You’re terrible.”
