He’s texting a mile a minute, and even though I’m extremely casual and laid back, I’m dying to know who he’s talking to.

“Who are you texting?” I have no self-control.

He lifts an eyebrow and gives me a sideways glance. “Friends.”

I wait for more.

“What?” He leans back slightly. “You said we’re going our separate ways once we get there, and I need a place to crash.”

I blink. “You have friends in Florida?”

Looking back at his phone, he says, “I used to live there.”

Well, I wasn’t expecting that. When could he have lived in Florida? It’s not like we graduated that long ago. If he did live there, it couldn’t have been for very long. I assumed that he’d been working since graduation, but I guess I don’t know what the past three years have been like for him at all. All I know is that I suddenly want to know a lot more about him.

Aiden

“You used to live there?”

I knew I shouldn’t have said anything.

“When?” She yawns as the word falls from her mouth.

I keep typing my text and ignore her. Ethan is the only one I’m willing to reach out to because he’s the only one who isn’t annoying. Well, him and Em. Em is too close to what happened, though—she might make it weird.

Out of the corner of my eye, I can see Claire rubbing her hands over her face. I’m not sure if she’s frustrated with me or if she’s just tired, but let’s be real, it’s probably both.

“A little over a year ago,” I say, still not looking at her. My eyes stay locked on the text I sent to Ethan. I better see those three dots pop up soon.

“What made you move there?”

This is why I shouldn’t have said anything. I don’t want to answer these questions, and frankly, I don’t owe this girl an explanation. My screen lights up.

Ethan: When will you be here?

I knew he wouldn’t ask me why I was coming. I knew he wouldn’t make a big deal of it. Thank god for people like Ethan who mind their own business. I need to answer him, but it’s hard to do that with her eyes burning into me. Looking up, I say, “Christ, what is it with you and all the questions? Can’t I have five minutes to figure out where I’m sleeping tomorrow?”

I look away before I can register more than her eyes widening. She doesn’t say anything, and I don’t want to think about why she’s not calling me an asshole like I deserve, so I take her silence for the blessing it is and keep texting.

My phone lights up again, so I swipe it open.

Chad: Made a group chat since you assholes didn’t include me.

I lean my head back and internally groan before answering. I didn’t realize Ethan still lived with Chad. Ethan is cool. I like Ethan, and I can’t say that about most people. Chad, on the other hand...well, his name is fucking Chad.

Ethan: Sorry. He asked who I was texting.

Chad: Sorry? More like YOU’RE WELCOME. What’s this about you coming to town? Time to party????

Taking a deep breath, I let my fingers type a response.

Me: Last minute trip. Didn’t plan on it.

Chad: The Natty Shack is back in business!

Ethan: I thought we agreed to stop calling our apartment that.
